Abstract:
A computer-assisted shopping system includes a self-service scanning station, a multiplexing tendering station, and associated methods of serving customers at a retail establishment. One of the methods of customer service of the present invention allows a shopping establishment to offer a self-scanning shopping option to customers who are unable or unwilling to obtain a personal identification card, which is required with the prior art self-scanning shopping systems. A self-service scanning station is provided that includes a bar-code scanner, preferably permanently mounted or tethered to the self-service scanning station, a processor, optionally connected by a network to a central computer of the shopping establishment, and a printer for printing itemized receipts of items to be purchased. A customer who does not have a personal identification card may bring the purchases to the self-service shopping station, scan the purchases and obtain an itemized receipt of items to be purchased. The customer may pay for the scanned items directly at the self-service scanning station by inserting a credit card into the credit card reader, or may pay at a cashier station.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a data processing and retrieval system for use in a self-checkout system utilized in a retail facility. A plurality of customers are provided with a portable data collecting terminal having a bar code reader. Once the data is collected using the portable terminal, a record of the session is uploaded to a customers data file upon the entry of an authorization code. In the event errors occur during data entry or in the entry of the authorization codes, a customer service desk is provided which assists the customer in completing the transaction.

Abstract:
A hand-held data acquisition terminal includes an ovoid electronic housing having an optical scanning device at one end with respect to a major axis and a handle extending outwardly from the opposite end with respect to the major axis. The electronic housing includes an upwardly facing display and operator controls which can be activated by the thumb of a user holding the terminal by the handle. A compact assembly of electronic components is provided. A cradle is provided having a concave cylindrical surface and a pocket for receiving the handle of the terminal. An accessory is also described for mounting the terminal to a shopping cart.

Abstract:
A wireless system for self-service shopping is described that includes a customer identification device with an optically readable code, a portable terminal that includes an optical code reader, a local area radio, a terminal controller, and a locking mechanism, a master station, consisting of a master controller and a master radio, and a receiving rack for the portable terminals to which the scanners may be locked using the locking mechanism. A customer presents his or her identification device to a terminal which reads the code, the code is transferred by radio to the master controller which checks the identification and, if valid, sends an authorized signal by radio to the terminal to unlock the scanner. In addition, several locking mechanisms are described that are controlled by the terminal controller. An additional feature provides a shopping cart with a receiving cradle for a portable terminal that allows the customer to lock the scanner onto the cart for hands-free shopping.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a personal shopping system for combined use in both the home of a user and a shopping establishment. The system includes a host computer which is coupled to a host modem and, optionally, to at least one wireless multi-access point. At least one shopping establishment kiosk cradle is employed to interface with a portable terminal which is also part of the system.
