Low-Profile Cam Locking Threaded Fastener

View page
US Patent:
8506223, Aug 13, 2013
Filed:
Aug 14, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/541903
Inventors:
Alistair Neil McKinlay - Culver City CA, US
International Classification:
F16B 39/24
US Classification:
411147, 411149, 411432, 411533, 411538
Abstract:
An low-profile cam locking fastener assembly in which a locking nut is connected to a locking washer through a tubular skirt that extends from the nut opening. The skirt and nut opening are coaxial having contiguous inner surfaces that are threaded to receive a bolt or stud. The washer is mounted to the skirt so as to be rotatable with respect to nut as well as axially movable to a position in which cooperating cam elements on opposing faces between the washer and the nut are separated. The cam elements are arranged so that when the nut and washer are fastened down to a bolt or stud on a workpiece, the cam elements engage one another to substantially prevent the nut from loosening from the threaded bolt/stud.

Dual Torque Setting Tension Control Fastener

View page
US Patent:
20080226411, Sep 18, 2008
Filed:
Mar 16, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/687076
Inventors:
Alistair N. McKinlay - Redondo Beach CA, US
International Classification:
F16B 31/00
B60B 7/06
F16B 13/04
US Classification:
411 2, 301 35621, 411 43
Abstract:
A tension control fastener having a cylindrical shank having a pair of adjacent breakaway sections at one end. The outermost breakaway section engages an installation tool and shears off from the fastener at a first lower predetermined amount of torque, while the inner breakaway section shears off from the fastener at a second higher predetermined amount of torque.

Anti-Back-Out Fastener For Applications Under Vibration

View page
US Patent:
20140017028, Jan 16, 2014
Filed:
Jul 24, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/949278
Inventors:
Alistair McKinlay - La Quinta CA, US
International Classification:
F16B 39/24
US Classification:
411149, 411147, 411204
Abstract:
A fastener is disclosed for use in a high vibration application wherein the fastener is engaged to a blind hole. The fastener includes a lock washer including wedge locking action fastening features and a head of the fastener including mating wedge locking action fastening features. The wedge locking action fastening features include a greater inclination than a pitch angle of the fastener such that the fastener is prevented from backing out.

Wedge-Locking Fastener Assembly With A Cammed Flange

View page
US Patent:
56264496, May 6, 1997
Filed:
Sep 15, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/528857
Inventors:
Alistair N. McKinlay - Marina Del Rey CA
Assignee:
Hong Kong Disc Lock Company Limited - Hong Kong
International Classification:
F16B 3924
F16B 4300
US Classification:
411149
Abstract:
A wedge-type flanged fastener assembly is provided for holding two or more workpieces together without loosening due to vibration or shock forces. The assembly includes a nut and lock washer having mating cam surfaces contoured to achieve a high strength wedge lock resistance to unloosening movement of the nut. The lock washer is captively retained on the nut by an annular flange extending from the nut through the central opening in the washer. Several variations of a flanged wedge type fastener are disclosed.

Self-Locking Safety Wheel Nut With Locking Wrench

View page
US Patent:
60395249, Mar 21, 2000
Filed:
Sep 14, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/152529
Inventors:
Alistair N. McKinlay - Marina Del Rey CA
Assignee:
Hong Kong Disc-Lock Company Limited - Wanchai
International Classification:
F16B 3924
F16B 4300
US Classification:
411149
Abstract:
A wedge lock fastener assembly includes a threaded nut having a peripheral flange, a wedge lock end face, and plural wrench-receiving notches in said flange. An associated washer has a peripheral skirt encircling the nut flange, a wedge lock face, and plural tabs extending angularly from the skirt across the peripheral flange so that the washer is captively retained on the nut. Peripheral notches in the washer are adapted to align with the notches in the nut, such that a special wrench can be extended into the aligned notches for loosening the nut and washer as a unit.

Self-Locking Fastener With Captive Washer

Lock Washer Assembly Having Wedge Lock Action

View page
US Patent:
50805452, Jan 14, 1992
Filed:
Jan 30, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/648044
Inventors:
Alistair N. McKinlay - Marina Del Rey CA
Assignee:
Hong Kong Disc Lock Company Limited
International Classification:
F16B 3924
F16B 39282
US Classification:
411149
Abstract:
A lock washer assembly in which two washers are used in back-to-back relation. One face of each washer is serrated to form a series of circumferentially extending cam surfaces; the other face of each washer is flat and devoid of any projections or surface discontinuities. When the lock washers are arranged between a workpiece and a fastener element (nut or head of a bolt) the cam surfaces act as wedge lock devices; and any tendency of the fastener element to unloosen increases the contact pressure of the flat washer faces on the workpiece and fastener element.

Wedge-Action Lock Washer Assembly Having Coupled Washers
