Abstract:
A device is provided for insertion into a human bone to replicate the biomechanical forces found in a healthy bone in a human skeleton. The device can be configured in several different ways and is customizable to meet the requirements of a particular bone. The device is constructed with a central shaft having a compression plate at one end and a base member at the other. A plurality of wires interconnects the compression plate and the base member. The central shaft is threaded at both ends, with one end threaded into the base member and the other end threaded into the compression plate. An actuator is used to urge the base member in the direction of the compression plate. This action forces the plurality of wires to bow in an outward direction to stabilize the device against the bony surface on the interior surface of a bone.

Abstract:
An intraosseous device is disclosed that can be positioned to straddle a bone fracture to stabilize the fracture and provide structural support for the bone and the surrounding areas. The device includes wire assemblies that are deployable on each side of the fracture to anchor the device within the bone. For the device, an elongated tube is formed with a plurality of slots at each tube end. A central member is mounted inside the tube and moveable members are positioned inside the tube, one at each tube end. Wires connect the moveable members to the central member. A rod cooperates with each moveable member and is rotatable to draw each moveable member inwardly toward the central member. This forces each wire to bow and displace a central wire portion through a corresponding slot and into contact with the bone's inner wall to anchor the device in the bone.

Abstract:
A surgical cannula for providing access to a surgical site in a patient's body. A cannula body of the surgical cannula has a flange attached to a proximal end. The cannula body is defined by two complementary portions, pivotally connected together proximate the flange. The cannula body has a bore extending from the flange to the surgical site. The cannula is inserted into the patient's body above the surgical site, until a lower surface of the flange contacts the patient's superficial fascia, which acts as a stop to prevent over-insertion. A thread provided on the cannula body holds the cannula in position in the patient's body. Apertures in the flange communicate with channels within the cannula body that extend to the surgical site to provide the surgeon with additional means to provide light, irrigation, and/or suction to and from the surgical site. The two complimentary portions can be pivoted apart from one another within the patient's body to provide an increased amount of access to the surgical site.
