Contactor Diagnostic System And Method

View page
US Patent:
20200124671, Apr 23, 2020
Filed:
Oct 18, 2018
Appl. No.:
16/164216
Inventors:
- Dearborn MI, US
Wesley Edward Burkman - Dearborn MI, US
Assignee:
Ford Global Technologies, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
G01R 31/327
Abstract:
A contactor assembly including a housing, an accessible contactor assembly component, a contact bar, and a module is provided. The accessible contactor assembly component may be disposed within the housing. The contact bar may be electrically connected to the accessible contactor assembly component and translatable between an open and a closed position. The module may be programmed to identify whether the contact bar is in the open or closed position based on detected voltage of the accessible contactor assembly component. The assembly may further include a pair of coil terminals, a pair of power terminals, and a diagnostic terminal arranged for electrical communication with the accessible contactor assembly component. The module may be further programmed to detect whether the contact bar is in the open or closed position responsive to detection of a voltage status of the diagnostic terminal.

Electrified Vehicle Contactor Status

US Patent:
20200079222, Mar 12, 2020
Filed:
Sep 6, 2018
Appl. No.:
16/123733
Inventors:
- Dearborn MI, US
Wesley Edward Burkman - Dearborn MI, US
Baojin Wang - Ypsilanti MI, US
John Paul Gibeau - Canton MI, US
International Classification:
B60L 11/18
Abstract:
A system for a vehicle includes a controller and contactor arranged to close responsive to current magnitude through a coil thereof exceeding a first threshold. The controller, following a request to open the contactor, applies current to the coil at a magnitude less than the first threshold for a duration, and responsive to peak current through the contactor during the duration being less than a second threshold, prevents start of the vehicle.

Contactor Assembly And Contactor Transitioning Method

View page
US Patent:
20190385804, Dec 19, 2019
Filed:
Jun 19, 2018
Appl. No.:
16/012192
Inventors:
- Dearborn MI, US
Wesley Burkman - Dearborn MI, US
International Classification:
H01H 50/54
H01H 1/50
H01H 3/00
H01H 3/28
H01H 3/40
Abstract:
An exemplary contactor assembly includes, among other things, a movable contact that transitions relative to a plurality of stationary contacts back and forth between a closed position and an open position. The movable contact contacts at least one of the stationary contacts with an initial contact surface and then a final contact surface when the movable contact is in the closed position. An exemplary contactor transitioning method includes, among other things, changing areas of contact between a movable contact and a plurality of stationary contacts when the movable contact is in a closed position with the plurality of stationary contacts.

Controlled Pre-Charge Circuit Arrangement

View page
US Patent:
20180043783, Feb 15, 2018
Filed:
Aug 9, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/232554
Inventors:
- Dearborn MI, US
Arnold Kweku MENSAH-BROWN - Canton MI, US
Wesley Edward BURKMAN - Dearborn MI, US
Robert BOLDUC - Northville MI, US
International Classification:
B60L 11/18
Abstract:
A vehicle system includes a relay and coil of a contactor. The relay is configured to transfer current between a traction battery and an electrical load when closed. The system also includes a controller configured to operate a switch such that current flow from the traction battery through the coil and switch, and bypassing the relay, causes the relay to close to permit pre-charging of the load.

High Voltage Battery Contactor Arrangement For Dc Fast Charging

View page
US Patent:
20170028857, Feb 2, 2017
Filed:
Jul 27, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/810006
Inventors:
- Dearborn MI, US
Vineeth Seshadri Kallur - Novi MI, US
Masahiro Kimoto - Plymouth MI, US
Wesley Edward Burkman - Dearborn MI, US
Benjamin A. Tabatowski-Bush - South Lyon MI, US
International Classification:
B60L 11/18
Abstract:
A charging system for a high voltage battery includes a pair of contactors each electrically connected to one of positive and negative terminals of the battery and configured to enable charging of the battery when closed; and a controller programmed to generate a notification indicating that one of the contactors is welded closed based on port voltage values achieved while issuing a predetermined sequence of open and close commands to the contactors after charge completion.

Cell To Cell Terminal Connections For A High Voltage Battery

View page
US Patent:
20160056430, Feb 25, 2016
Filed:
Aug 20, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/464191
Inventors:
- Dearborn MI, US
Wesley Edward Burkman - Dearborn MI, US
International Classification:
H01M 2/10
H01M 2/22
H01M 2/30
Abstract:
A traction battery assembly is provided which may include first and second arrays spaced apart and each having a plurality of battery cells. The battery cells may each have a positive and a negative terminal on a cell face facing the other array. The cells may be oriented in tilted stacks such that the terminals of at least one of the cells of the first array are aligned with oppositely charged terminals of two different cells of the second array. The assembly may also include a frame supporting and orienting the cells such that the cells of the arrays are tilted at opposing and inversely equal angles which are based on a width and length of each battery cell to facilitate the alignment of the terminals of at least one of the cells of the first array with the oppositely charged terminals of two different cells of the second array.

Phev Heating Modes To Provide Cabin Comfort

US Patent:
20140109872, Apr 24, 2014
Filed:
Mar 7, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/787880
Inventors:
- Dearborn MI, US
William David Treharne - Ypsilanti MI, US
Paul Stephen Bryan - Belleville MI, US
Scott James Thompson - Waterford MI, US
Wesley Burkman - Melvindale MI, US
Assignee:
FORD GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIES, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
F02B 77/00
US Classification:
123435, 1231425 E
Abstract:
A vehicle is disclosed that has multiple coolant paths selected by control of a valve. A valve system is configured to direct coolant from an engine to a heat exchanger according to a difference between a temperature associated with the engine and a temperature associated with the heat exchanger. The valve system is also configured to direct coolant from the engine to an electric heater and to, in response to a heat demanded from the heat exchanger being greater than a heat capability of the electric heater, request the engine to run. A method is disclosed for controlling a valve to change from an isolation position in which the valve isolates coolant circulating through an electric heater and the valve from coolant circulating through an engine to a non-isolation position in which the valve directs coolant from the engine to the electric heater.
