Method And System For Constructing A Virtual Reality Environment From Spatially Related Recorded Images

View page
US Patent:
6337688, Jan 8, 2002
Filed:
Jan 29, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/240925
Inventors:
Viktors Berstis - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06T 1570
US Classification:
345473
Abstract:
A simulation of a real environment is constructed from a series of recorded frames that each contain an image of the real environment and each have data recording the associated position and orientation within the real environment. The series of image frames is first grouped into frame groups so that each frame group includes only recorded frames that have closely spaced associated positions. Logical links are then created between neighboring frame groups, where the logical links are indicative of navigation paths permitted during simulation between positions associated with the frame groups thus linked. The environment is then simulated by displaying a recorded frame belonging to a current frame group. In response to an input specifying a desired movement within the simulation, a recorded frame from a neighboring frame group of the current frame group is displayed instead.

Method And System For Alerting A Pilot To The Location Of Other Aircraft

View page
US Patent:
6348877, Feb 19, 2002
Filed:
Jun 17, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/335294
Inventors:
Viktors Berstis - Austin TX
Joel Leslie Smith - Round Rock TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G01C 2100
US Classification:
340980, 340961, 345 7, 359630, 701301
Abstract:
A method of alerting a pilot to the location of other aircraft begins by detecting the presence of at least one other aircraft and then calculating that aircrafts projected flight path in the sky. Given the position of the pilots head or eyes, a given image (e. g. , a circle) is then projected (or otherwise displayed) on the aircrafts windshield at a calculated position. This position represents a relatively small region in the sky that the pilot, given the head or eye position and the projected flight path, should expect to see the other aircraft. In this manner, the pilot need no longer search the sky to attempt to map a display image to an actual location in his or her field of view.

Load Balancing And Distributing Switch-On Control For A Circuit Breaker, An Appliance, A Device, Or An Apparatus

View page
US Patent:
6388854, May 14, 2002
Filed:
Dec 9, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/457940
Inventors:
Viktors Berstis - Austin TX
Joel Leslie Smith - Round Rock TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H02H 300
US Classification:
361 94, 307141, 3071414
Abstract:
The present invention is a load balancing and distributing switch-on/turn-on control for a circuit breaker, an appliance, a device, or an apparatus wherein each switch-on device on a circuit breaker, appliance, device, or apparatus generates and provides a turn-on time delay up to a maximum turn-on time delay so that the turn-on times and respective loads after a power failure from all circuit breakers, appliances, devices, and/or apparatuses are distributed and/or balanced over a turn-on period. The present invention distributes and balances the load and consumption by various appliances, devices, and apparatuses at the time of initial power up after a power failure. The present invention also distributes the turn-on times of the various appliances, devices, and apparatuses at the initial power up time. A circuit system and method for load balancing and distributing switch-on control of an operating device. A micro-controller is able to couple to the operating device and to a power-in bus for receiving power from a power source.

Master/Valet Keyset And Lock

View page
US Patent:
6389859, May 21, 2002
Filed:
Mar 9, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/522195
Inventors:
Michael A. Paolini - Round Rock TX
Viktors Berstis - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corp. - Armonk NY
International Classification:
E05B 3510
US Classification:
70340, 70338, 70383
Abstract:
A master/valet lock and keyset provides a means of permitting limited one-time entry after locking a door to individuals possessing a valet key. In an embodiment, the mechanism relies on the use of a special master key to access a secondary lock cylinder, by means of which the full range of lock positions is allowed. Using the valet key, only the primary lock cylinder is accessed, restricting the range of positions to allow the user to unlock and relock the lock just once. This system may provide a means to allow occasional entry without granting unlimited access to the premises. For example, maintenance personnel could be given a valet key with which they could visit a home to perform repairs. The homeowner would be secure in the knowledge that the key could not be used to enter the home a second time.

System And Method For Overloading An Existing Card

View page
US Patent:
6427909, Aug 6, 2002
Filed:
Dec 17, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/465289
Inventors:
Stacey Alan Barnes - Round Rock TX
Viktors Berstis - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06K 500
US Classification:
235380, 235381, 235382, 2353825, 235375, 705 41, 705 42
Abstract:
A system and method of providing and using an overloaded card with overloaded card services. A card terminal reads a host card, and a server system determines whether or not to overload the host card with a card service of one other card. The server system overloads the host card with the other card services by associating the other card services with the host card within the server system such that no additional information must be encoded within or maintained by the host card.

Method For Managing And Updating Overloaded Cards

Abstract:
A system for managing services of a host card having multiple card services associated therewith. The host card is set up as an overloaded card by associating at least one other service of the at least one other card to the host card. The overloaded card with the overloaded services are managed. Overloaded card management data relating to the overloaded card and the overloaded card services are maintained, stored, and/or updated to reflect a change, if any, made to the overloaded card and with respect to the overloaded card services. Integrated Keyslot

View page
US Patent:
6430977, Aug 13, 2002
Filed:
Mar 9, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/522198
Inventors:
Viktors Berstis - Austin TX
Michael A. Paolini - Round Rock TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corp. - Armonk NY
International Classification:
E05B 1100
US Classification:
70 63, 70276, 70389, 70456 R, 232 19
Abstract:
An integrated keyslot makes it possible to secure a door key immediately after locking a door. Upon leaving the premises and locking the door, the key is deposited in the keyslot. In an embodiment, a chute connects the keyslot to a receptacle on the interior surface of the door, which retains the key until it can be retrieved by the owner. The method and system described herein are believed to be advantageous in providing greater security to premises. As an example, maintenance personnel could be given a key with which they could visit a home to perform repairs. Immediately upon leaving, they would lock the door and deposit the key in the integrated keyslot, thus protecting the owner against loss or theft of the key.
