Integrated Blood Oxygenator And Pump System Having Means For Reducing Manifold Flooding

View page
US Patent:
6368557, Apr 9, 2002
Filed:
Dec 30, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/223685
Inventors:
Alec A. Piplani - Mountain View CA
Anthony Makarewicz - Dublin CA
Jean-Pierre Dueri - Sunnyvale CA
Thomas A. Afzal - Menlo Park CA
Assignee:
Cardiovention, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
A61M 114
US Classification:
422 45, 604 609, 604 611
Abstract:
Improvements to integrated blood pump/oxygenator having a rotating hollow fiber bundle assembly that both oxygenates and pumps blood are provided. A plurality of vanes arranged along a central shaft of the device increase pressure near the center of the fiber bundle to prevent microbubble generation and blood trauma. Shearing loads imposed on the fiber elements of the fiber bundle are reduced by the addition of a reinforcement structure, while the gas flow path is configured to minimize flooding and loss of oxygenation efficiency due to occasional rupture of fiber elements. Blood trauma may be further reduced by contouring the vanes and other components of the device.

US Patent:
6387323, May 14, 2002
Filed:
May 15, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/079863
Inventors:
Thomas A. Afzal - Menlo Park CA
Ronald G. Williams - Menlo Park CA
Assignee:
Cardiovention, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
A61M 114
US Classification:
422 45, 422 48, 604 609, 604 611, 604 614
Abstract:
An integrated blood oxygenation and pump system suitable for use in a sterile field having a low priming volume is provided in which a blood oxygenator portion of the system includes an active element, separate from the pump, that disrupts the development of laminar flow and stagnation zones in the fiber bundle employed for gas exchange. The integrated system enables the pump and oxygenator to be used independently of one another or be rapidly reconfigured to provide both pumping action and blood oxygenation.

Filed:
Dec 30, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/475467
Inventors:
Thomas A. Afzal - Menlo Park CA
Jean-Pierre Dueri - Sunnyvale CA
Alex Leynov - Walnut Creek CA
Anthony Makarewicz - Dublin CA
Alec A. Piplani - Mountain View CA
Greg Potts - Mountain View CA
Assignee:
Cardiovention, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
A61M 114
US Classification:
422 45, 422 48, 604 401, 604 611, 604 613, 604 614, 96257
Abstract:
Improvements to integrated blood pump/oxygenator having a rotating hollow fiber bundle assembly that both oxygenates and pumps blood are provided. An inner member arranged along a central axis of the device accelerates blood entering the fiber bundle to reduce microbubble generation and blood trauma. Shearing loads imposed on the fiber elements of the fiber bundle are reduced by the addition of a reinforcement structure, while the gas flow path is configured to reduce flooding and loss of oxygenation efficiency due to occasional rupture of fiber elements.
