Perception System With Attention Module For Processing Visual Data

View page
US Patent:
20230010239, Jan 12, 2023
Filed:
Jul 6, 2021
Appl. No.:
17/367847
Inventors:
- Detroit MI, US
Jordan B. Chipka - Commerce Twp MI, US
Thanura R. Elvitigala - Frisco TX, US
Assignee:
GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLC - Detroit MI
International Classification:
G06K 9/00
G06K 9/32
G06T 3/40
G06N 3/08
B60R 11/04
Abstract:
A perception system is adapted to receive visual data from a camera and includes a controller having a processor and tangible, non-transitory memory on which instructions are recorded. A subsampling module, an object detection module and an attention module are each selectively executable by the controller. The controller is configured to sample an input image from the visual data to generate a rescaled whole image frame, via the subsampling module. The controller is configured to extract feature data from the rescaled whole image frame, via the object detection module. A region of interest in the rescaled whole image frame is identified, based on an output of the attention module. The controller is configured to generate a first image based on the rescaled whole image frame and a second image based on the region of interest, the second image having a higher resolution than the first image.

Prediction Of Driver Intent At Intersection

View page
US Patent:
20170190334, Jul 6, 2017
Filed:
Jan 6, 2016
Appl. No.:
14/989531
Inventors:
- Detroit MI, US
Upali P. Mudalige - Oakland Township MI, US
Thanura Ranmal Elvitigala - Hershey PA, US
International Classification:
B60W 40/09
G08G 1/16
Abstract:
A system and method for predicting whether a driver of a host vehicle or a remote vehicle intends to make a left or right turn or travel straight through an intersection before the host vehicle or remote vehicle reaches the intersection that relies on a probability model that employs a dynamic Bayesian network. The method includes obtaining a plurality of environmental cues that identify external parameters at or around the intersection, where the environmental cues include position and velocity of the remote vehicle, and obtaining a plurality of host vehicle cues that define operation of the host vehicle. The method then predicts the turning intent of the host vehicle and/or remote vehicle at the intersection using the model based on both the external cues and the vehicle cues using the model. The model can use learned information about previous driver turns at the intersection.

Determining Driver Intention At Traffic Intersections For Automotive Crash Avoidance

US Patent:
20170193384, Jul 6, 2017
Filed:
Jan 6, 2016
Appl. No.:
14/989502
Inventors:
- DETROIT MI, US
THANURA RANMAL ELVITIGALA - HERSHEY PA, US
International Classification:
G06N 7/00
Abstract:
A system and method for determining whether a driver of a host vehicle intends to make a left or right turn with a certain level of confidence. The method obtains a plurality of turning cues that identify external parameters around the host vehicle and/or define operating conditions of the host vehicle, and determines a confidence level that the host vehicle will make a left or right turn based on the turning cues, where determining the confidence level includes weighting each of the cues based on current vehicle operating conditions.

US Patent:
20170113665, Apr 27, 2017
Filed:
Oct 27, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/924585
Inventors:
- DETROIT MI, US
THANURA RANMAL ELVITIGALA - HERSHEY PA, US
International Classification:
B60T 7/22
G01S 17/93
G08G 1/16
G01S 13/93
Abstract:
A system and method for warning a driver of a host vehicle of a potential collision with other vehicles when turning at an intersection. The method includes determining if the host vehicle is likely to turn at the intersection, and if so, segmenting the intersection into a plurality of different regions, where each region has a different level of collision threat risk. The method obtains the speed, velocity and position of the host vehicle and any relevant remote vehicles in the intersection. The method determines a predicted path of the host vehicle and the predicted path of the remote vehicles. The method then determines whether the host vehicle and the remote vehicles will simultaneously occupy a collision zone in the intersection based on the predicted paths, and if so, issues a warning to the driver of the collision risk or apply vehicle controls to avoid or mitigate the collision risk.

US Patent:
20170113683, Apr 27, 2017
Filed:
Oct 27, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/924560
Inventors:
- Detroit MI, US
Thanura Ranmal Elvitigala - Hershey PA, US
International Classification:
B60W 30/08
Abstract:
A system and method for warning a vehicle driver of a potential collision when turning left or right at or near an intersection, where the system and method provide additional analysis to limit false positive and false negative warnings based on specialized circumstances. The method includes determining if the host vehicle is likely to turn at or near the intersection, and obtaining speed, velocity and position data of the host vehicle and any relevant remote vehicles. The method determines a predicted path of the host vehicle and the remote vehicles based on the speed, velocity and position data, and issues a warning to a driver of the host vehicle if the host vehicle and one of the remote vehicles may collide based on the predicted paths. If the host vehicle is in a specialized circumstance, the method provides additional collision analysis to reduce false positive warnings and/or false negative warnings.
