Cast On Mold Inserts

View page
US Patent:
41733266, Nov 6, 1979
Filed:
Jul 28, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/819695
Inventors:
Terry R. Oxenreider - Wernersville PA
Assignee:
General Battery Corporation - Reading PA
International Classification:
B22D 1900
US Classification:
249 83
Abstract:
A novel mold having a plurality of channels for casting battery straps and posts on groups of battery positive and negative plates, the mold being equipped with a projection on at least one end of each of the channels, the projections extending into the channels of the mold toward the opposite end of the channel. The lengths of the mold channels are slightly less than the lengths of rows of positive or negative lugs so that the elements of the battery group are gently compressed or squeezed together. The end walls of the mold channels extend beyond the main mold body, a portion of the extended walls being beveled in a direction away from the mold channels.

Battery Case Having A Side Terminal Molded Therein

View page
US Patent:
43518907, Sep 28, 1982
Filed:
Jul 31, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/174126
Inventors:
Terry Oxenreider - Wernersville PA
Assignee:
General Battery Corporation - Reading PA
International Classification:
H01M 206
H01M 230
US Classification:
429179
Abstract:
A side terminal battery container of the type having a side terminal molded therein is disclosed. The side terminal of the present invention does not extend into the interior of the battery container and is particularly useful for resistance welding techniques during the battery manufacturing process.

Apparatus And Method For Casting Lead Into Plastic For Side Terminal Batteries

View page
US Patent:
43771971, Mar 22, 1983
Filed:
Feb 11, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/233483
Inventors:
Terry Oxenreider - Wernersville PA
Donald A. Duesterhoeft - Robesonia PA
Edgar M. Erb - Lancaster PA
Assignee:
General Battery Corporation - Reading PA
International Classification:
B22D 1704
B22D 1900
US Classification:
164112
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for injecting molten lead from a reservoir into a die mold cavity formed about an aperture in the wall of a plastic battery for casting lead-alloy battery terminal connectors. Batteries are positioned adjacent the molten lead reservoir of the apparatus and mold portions move together to hold the battery containers in a clamp-like action. Molten lead is die cast under pressure into the mold cavity in which a stainless steel threaded nut is positioned. The lead is forced through a heated chamber into a portion of the mold which may be water cooled. The mold is designed to allow venting of gases, thereby eliminating porosity; and the apparatus is designed to provide casting which is free of jagged projections in the sprue hole.

Manifold Vented Battery Cover

US Patent:
42787424, Jul 14, 1981
Filed:
May 5, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/146577
Inventors:
Terry R. Oxenreider - Wernersville PA
Herbert A. Bush - Kenhorst PA
Assignee:
General Battery Corporation - Reading PA
International Classification:
H01M 212
US Classification:
429 88
Abstract:
An improved manifold vented battery cover is disclosed. The disclosed battery cover has an improved manifold construction which is defined by the assembly of mated inner and outer members. In addition, the disclosed cover includes an external terminal post having a repositioning portion encapsulated within the mated inner and outer members.

Epoxy Sealed Lead Battery Probe And Method For Inserting Same

View page
US Patent:
40105377, Mar 8, 1977
Filed:
Jul 3, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/593000
Inventors:
Terry Russel Oxenreider - Wernersville PA
Assignee:
General Battery Corporation - Reading PA
International Classification:
H01M 1048
US Classification:
296232
Abstract:
An electric storage battery is disclosed having a case to retain electrolyte up to a given preferred level, cover means for retaining the electrolyte within the case, said cover means having defined therein at least one bore, said bore comprising at least one constricted section, probe means for sensing the preferred level of the electrolyte, said probe means being disposed through the cover, and resin means for chemically sealing at least a portion of said probe means with said cover means. In addition to the above, the present application discloses an inter-relationship between the remainder of the probe and the bore which allows for the introduction of resin between the surfaces of the probe and bore to create an effective seal between the probe and battery cover. Finally, a unique configuration of probe and bore is disclosed which produces a strong electrolyte tight seal between the probe and battery cover.

Explosion Resistant Battery Cover Design

View page
US Patent:
41683501, Sep 18, 1979
Filed:
Nov 23, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/854054
Inventors:
Terry R. Oxenreider - Wernersville PA
Joseph I. Heiser - Wyomissing Hills PA
Assignee:
General Battery Corporation - Reading PA
International Classification:
H01M 212
US Classification:
429 87
Abstract:
A maintenance free battery having explosion resistant characteristics for multi-celled battery containers. A battery cover has a main body with an elongate recess therein extending across its length. Within the first recess there are a plurality of vent well openings extending into the cells of the battery, and a plurality of vent plugs filling each opening which provide for the escape of gas and retard the escape of electrolyte. A recess plate fits snugly within the recess, the plate attaching to each of the vent plugs. Provisions are made to insure that the ends of the plate seal off the ends of the recess to prevent the leakage of gas between the plate ends and recess end walls.
