Abstract:
A pneumatic radial tire has a chipper in place of a traditional apex, the chipper located between a carcass main portion and turnup portion. The chipper layer may be composed of a chopped carbon fiber and aramid composite reinforced elastomeric layer. The tire sidewalls have a radial height SH and a section width SW located within a range of 0. 4 to 0. 44 of the sidewall radial height SH measured from the bead core. The section width SW may further be located within a range of 0. 1″ to 0. 3″ inches from a radially outward end of the chipper layer in a radial direction. The tread may of a dual layer construction, having a radially inward first layer formed of a relatively low rolling resistance compound and a radially outward second layer formed of a compound containing silica.

Abstract:
This invention relates to tires wherein at least a portion of its tire tread containing a running surface is of a rubber composition comprised of a functionalized elastomer, silica reinforcement, particularly precipitated silica aggregates which contain hydroxyl groups (e.g. silanol groups) and a blocked alkoxyorganomercaptosilane coupling agent. The rubber composition may constitute the entire, or major portion of, the running surface of the tread or may be limited to only a longitudinal circumferential strip, or portion, of the running surface of the tread. Such functionalized elastomer is an elastomer which contains functional groups distributed along the polymer chain and/or at its terminal end. Such functional groups may be divided into two categories, namely, a first category which promotes adsorptive interactions with the precipitated silica and a second category which chemically bonds to the precipitated silica. Such functionalized elastomer may contain functional group(s) from either of both of said first and second categories. In addition, said functionalized elastomer may be tin coupled.

Abstract:
This invention discloses a process for the synthesis of a rubbery polymer by emulsion polymerization that comprised polymerizing (1) a conjugated diolefin monomer and (2) a functionalized monomer having the structural formula: wherein the Rgroups can be the same or different and represent hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups containing from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, wherein Rrepresents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, wherein Rrepresents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, and wherein Rrepresents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, with the proviso that if Rrepresent an alkyl group then Rrepresents a hydrogen atom, and with the proviso that Rrepresents an alkyl group then Rrepresents a hydrogen atom, wherein said polymerization is conducted in an aqueous medium, and wherein said polymerization is initiated with a free radical initiator.

This invention relates to a tire with a tread of a rubber composition containing a combination of high and low glass transition temperature (Tg) synthetic elastomers. Abstract:
This invention relates to a rubber composition containing filler reinforcement comprised of precipitated silica with silica coupling agent therefore and conjugated diene-based elastomer which contains end-chain functionalization with multi-functional groups. The groups functionalizing the elastomer are multi-functional in the sense of containing one group reactive with at least one of said precipitated silica and silica coupling agent and another different group reactive with diene-based elastomers through sulfur cure of the rubber composition. A sulfur cured rubber composition containing said end-chain functionalization is provided. A tire is provided having a component comprised of said rubber composition. Representative of said tire component is a tire tread.
