Technique To Minimize Data Transfer Between Two Computers

View page
US Patent:
6345314, Feb 5, 2002
Filed:
Oct 27, 1995
Appl. No.:
08/548990
Inventors:
Gary Lee Cole - Endicott NY
Richard Kenneth McGuire - Brackney PA
Steven Michael Pritko - Endicott NY
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 954
US Classification:
709316
Abstract:
A host computer provides an object stored in the host computer to a target computer. In response to a need for an object at the target computer, the host computer generates and transfers to the target computer a proxy program instead of the object. The proxy program, when executed at the target computer, provides the object. Usually, the proxy program is much shorter than the object itself, and this reduces message traffic. The proxy program has various forms such as a call to another program resident in the target computer to recreate the object or a request to a function within the target computer to provide the object. The host computer can also be programmed into an object oriented environment, the object referencing other objects, and the proxy program forming an agent in the target computer which requests these other objects from the host computer only as needed by the target computer.

Method And System For Providing Control Accesses Between A Device On A Non-Proprietary Bus And A Device On A Proprietary Bus

View page
US Patent:
6549972, Apr 15, 2003
Filed:
Nov 22, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/444616
Inventors:
Viktors Berstis - Austin TX
George Willard Van Leeuwen - Rochester MN
Steven Michael Pritko - Endicott NY
Amal Ahmed Shaheen - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 1130
US Classification:
710311, 713201
Abstract:
A method for providing control accesses between a device on a non-proprietary bus and a device on a proprietary bus is disclosed. A gateway controller is connected between a proprietary bus and a non-proprietary bus. A message originated from a device on the non-proprietary bus intended for a device on the proprietary bus is checked by the gateway controller to determine if a transmission of the message should be permitted according to a permitted message bitmap. The permitted message bitmap contains a list of devices on the non-proprietary bus that are previously registered as able to communicate with devices on the proprietary bus and a list of permitted messages associated with each of the devices on the non-proprietary bus. The transmission of the message to the device on the proprietary bus is denied if the message is not registered within the permitted message bitmap.

Method And System For Synchronizing Audio And Visual Presentation In A Multi-Modal Content Renderer

View page
US Patent:
6745163, Jun 1, 2004
Filed:
Sep 27, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/670800
Inventors:
Larry A. Brocious - Apalachin NY
Stephen V. Feustel - Endwell NY
James P. Hennessy - Endicott NY
Michael J. Howland - Endicott NY
Steven M. Pritko - Endicott NY
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G10L 1300
US Classification:
704260, 707513
Abstract:
A system and method for a multi-modal browser/renderer that simultaneously renders content visually and verbally in a synchronized manner are provided without having the server applications change. The system and method receives a document via a computer network, parses the text in the document, provides an audible component associated with the text, simultaneously transmits to output the text and the audible component. The desired behavior for the renderer is that when some section of that content is being heard by the user, that section is visible on the screen and, furthermore, the specific visual content being audibly rendered is somehow highlighted visually. In addition, the invention also reacts to input from either the visual component or the aural component. The invention also allows any application or server to be accessible to someone via audio instead of visual means by having the browser handle the Embedded Browser Markup Language (EBML) disclosed herein so that it is audibly read to the user. Existing EBML statements can also be combined so that what is audibly read to the user is related to, but not identical to, the EBML text.

Method And System For Verifying Control Accesses Between A Device On A Non-Proprietary Bus And A Device On A Proprietary Bus

US Patent:
6823457, Nov 23, 2004
Filed:
Nov 22, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/444617
Inventors:
Viktors Berstis - Austin TX
George Willard Van Leeuwen - Rochester MN
Steven Michael Pritko - Endicott NY
Amal Ahmed Shaheen - Austin TX
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H04K 100
US Classification:
713182, 713166, 713172, 713200, 380262, 380264, 380268, 701 1, 701 36, 455 306
Abstract:
A method for verifying control accesses between a device on a non-proprietary bus and a device on a proprietary bus is disclosed. A gateway controller is connected between a proprietary bus and a non-proprietary bus. A determination is made as to whether or not a non-proprietary device is registered to more than one gateway controller. In response to a determination that the non-proprietary device is registered to more than one gateway controller, another determination is made as to whether or not the non-proprietary device is a portable device. In response to a determination that the non-proprietary device is a portable device, another determination is made as to whether or not a number of acceptable duplication has been exceeded. In response to a determination that the number of acceptable duplication has been exceeded, a flag is set to indicate a control access violation has occurred.

Method, System And Program Products For Sharing State Information Across Domains

View page
US Patent:
7302402, Nov 27, 2007
Filed:
Mar 30, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/050841
Inventors:
Patrick Joseph Callaghan - Vestal NY, US
Michael James Howland - Vestal NY, US
Steven M. Pritko - Endicott NY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06Q 30/00
US Classification:
705 26
Abstract:
State information is shared across domains. The state information is placed in one or more cookies that are shared across disjoint domains. An intermediary application is used, as one example, to enable the sharing of the state information (e. g. , the cookies) across the different domains. The intermediary application is used to add state information to requests received from a client and to responses going to the client. Further, an intermediary application is used to cause a client to save state information for any range of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), and to cause the client to send any previously stored state information to the intermediary application. Additionally, the intermediary application is used to cause state information previously saved by the client for one range of URLs to be subsequently saved by the client for one or more other range of URLs.

US Classification:
715225, 715203, 715205, 715226
Abstract:
A method of synchronizing an audio and visual presentation in a multi-modal browser. A form having at least one field requiring user supplied information is provided to a multi-modal browser. Blank fields within the form are filled in by user who provides either verbal or tactile interaction, or a combination of verbal and tactile interaction. The browser moves to the next field requiring user provided input. Finally, the form exits after the user has supplied input for all required fields.
