Apparatus And Method For Accessing Post 80H Codes Via A Computer Port

View page
US Patent:
6807629, Oct 19, 2004
Filed:
May 15, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/570984
Inventors:
Stephen J. Billick - Austin TX
Mark Joseph Palasz - Austin TX
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 15177
US Classification:
713 2, 710 62
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for accessing POST 80h codes using a USB or other port of a computer are described. In one embodiment, POST 80h data is sent in a serial format to a general purpose I/O (âGPIOâ) port of the computer. This data is output from the GPIO port on one of the data lines (e. g. , D+) of the USB port. Additionally, a soft clock is output from the GPIO port on another of the data lines (e. g. , D-) of the USB port. An external plug-in device is connected to the USB port via an appropriate connector for receiving the POST 80h data and clock signals and displaying the POST 80h codes on several seven segment display elements thereof. In an alternative embodiment, the data output via the USB port is read into a portable device and transmitted to a technical center for review and analysis.

System, Method And Software For Isolating Dual-Channel Memory During Diagnostics

View page
US Patent:
7370238, May 6, 2008
Filed:
Oct 31, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/699305
Inventors:
Stephen J. Billick - Austin TX, US
Saurabh Kumar - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
714 36, 713 2
Abstract:
A system, method and software for isolating information handling system memory system devices are disclosed. In dual-channel double-data-rate memory system implementations, teachings of the present disclosure facilitate accurate identification of memory system devices that fail diagnostic testing or cause memory errors. A BIOS level application is provided which permits user or application selection and isolation of memory system devices or components, thereby eliminating the need for physical removal of such components during testing as well as permitting continued use of the information handling system with defective memory system devices isolated.

Power Supply Indicator

View page
US Patent:
20020099961, Jul 25, 2002
Filed:
Jan 24, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/768437
Inventors:
Stephen Billick - Austin TX, US
Ariff Kazmi - Round Rock TX, US
International Classification:
G06F001/26
G06F001/28
G06F001/30
US Classification:
713/300000
Abstract:
A technique for isolating and indicating faults or defects in a personal computer system. The personal computer includes a power supply system with an internal fault detector and an enabling input that, when active, instigates the power supply fault detection procedure. In normal operation, an enabling signal is applied to the enabling input when the computer ON/OFF control is activated and when other aspects of the personal computer system have been determined to be operational. A mechanism for simulating an enabling signal and an indicator driven by the power supply fault detector permit fault indications to be localized as existing either in the power supply or elsewhere in the PC system.

Methods And Systems To Simplify Population Of Modular Components In An Information Handling System

View page
US Patent:
20120001763, Jan 5, 2012
Filed:
Jul 2, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/829722
Inventors:
Stephen Billick - Austin TX, US
Robert Bassman - Austin TX, US
International Classification:
G08B 21/00
G06F 12/06
G06F 15/177
US Classification:
340635, 713 2, 711105, 711E12078
Abstract:
Systems and methods to simplify population of modular components in an information handling system are disclosed. A method of populating modular components in an information handling system comprises a first step of initializing a populating sequence. A first socket corresponding to a first modular component is then identified. The first socket is flagged if it does not contain the first modular component. The first modular component is then installed in the first socket which is flagged.
