Multi-Ply Composites And Sheets Of Epoxy And Flocced 2:1 Layered Silicates And Methods For Them

View page
US Patent:
48510211, Jul 25, 1989
Filed:
Jan 14, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/143945
Inventors:
Walter J. Bohrn - Lancaster PA
Shelly N. Garman - Lancaster PA
Thomas M. Tymon - Lancaster PA
Assignee:
Armstrong World Industries, Inc. - Lancaster PA
International Classification:
C04B 2002
C04B 2006
US Classification:
65 17
Abstract:
Sheets and laminated composites are described which are prepared with epoxy and flocculated vermiculite and mica dispersions. Processes and procedures are also described to obtain film and sheet materials from the flocculated silicate and epoxy dispersions.

Highly Microporous 2:1 Layered Silicate Materials

View page
US Patent:
51837048, Feb 2, 1993
Filed:
Feb 11, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/653177
Inventors:
Walter J. Bohrn - Lancaster PA
Kimberly S. Diffenbaugh - Lancaster PA
Shelly N. Garman - Lancaster PA
Jatin C. Khanpara - St. Joseph MI
Assignee:
Armstrong World Industries, Inc. - Lancaster PA
International Classification:
B32B 300
US Classification:
4283055
Abstract:
Lamellar-structured highly microporous silicate compositions are provided which can be used as insulative articles and insulation material. The silicate is in the form of lamellae selected from the group consisting of mica and vermiculite. The silicate lamellae form the microporous structure, by forming the pore walls with the lamellae. Processes are described which prepare these compositions by removing the water from flocculated or unflocculated aqueous dispersions of chemically delaminated silicates while the arrangement of the lamellae in the dispersion is largely preserved, resulting in the highly microporous lamellar structure.

Binders And Fibers Combined With Flocced Mineral Materials And Water-Resistant Articles Made Therefrom

View page
US Patent:
47626437, Aug 9, 1988
Filed:
Jun 5, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/058800
Inventors:
Walter J. Bohrn - Lancaster PA
Richard A. Brubaker - Willow Street PA
Shelly N. Garman - Lancaster PA
Lewis K. Hosfeld - Mountville PA
Thomas M. Tymon - Lancaster PA
Kenneth K. Ko - Lancaster PA
Assignee:
Armstrong World Industries, Inc. - Lancaster PA
International Classification:
C04B 2002
C04B 2006
US Classification:
252378R
Abstract:
Disclosed are compositions of flocced mineral materials combined with fibers and/or binders. These compositions may be utilized to prepare high temperature resistant, water resistant articles. These materials are prepared by utilizing, as a starting material, a gellable layered swelled silicate that has an average charge per structural unit that ranges from about -0. 5 to -1 and which contains interstitial cations which promote swelling with a source of at least one species of an exchange cation that is derived from guanidine or compounds closely related thereto.

US Patent:
49120670, Mar 27, 1990
Filed:
Oct 14, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/257824
Inventors:
Shelly N. Garman - Lancaster PA
Assignee:
Armstrong World Industries, Inc. - Lancaster PA
International Classification:
C03C 1400
C04B 2206
C04B 3520
US Classification:
501 32
Abstract:
A heat and water resistant paper prepared with ceramic fiber and a 90-10 to 10-90 mixture of magnesium fluorhectorite and guanidinium fluorhectorite provides improved tensile strength. The fluorhectorites are flocculated from lithium fluorhectorite by ion exchange with 1 M solution of magnesium chloride and guanidinium chloride.

Fluorhectorite Laminate Printed Circuit Substrate

View page
US Patent:
49217488, May 1, 1990
Filed:
Nov 28, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/276819
Inventors:
Walter J. Bohrn - Lancaster PA
William D. DeSantis - Lancaster PA
Shelly N. Garman - Lancaster PA
Assignee:
Armstrong World Industries, Inc. - Lancaster PA
International Classification:
B32B 900
US Classification:
428209
Abstract:
Synthetic fluorhectorite films impregnated with polyimide resin are stacked, press-laminated and post-cured to produce a printed wiring board substrate with thermal expansion matching ceramic components. The substrate can be cleanly drilled for through-holes and plated without the need to remove residue as with glass/epoxy boards.
