Skills:
Experience with laboratory practices such as gel electrophoresis, northern blotting, western blotting, southern blotting, PCR, DNA sequencing, immuno-assays, environmental testing, and various other techniques. Use of these techniques in both independent and group research projects. Research includes: Research on Mps3 and Ctf18 proteins involving determination of their roles in chromosome cohesion during mitosis of yeast cells. Selection of specific genotypes achieved through selective media and microscopic dissections of tetrads. Mentor was Dr. Lisa Antoniacci. Water and air quality testing of the Susquehanna River near mine tunnels, and where it runs by an alleged cancer cluster in Pittston, Pennsylvania. Comparisons made to control samples both before and after mining areas. Chemical analysis of samples was performed including testing pH of water for evidence of acid mine drainage, testing for toxins and carcinogens in both water and air samples, and use of a portable air quality meter to determine particulate concentration. Mentor was Dr. Deborah Hokien.
