An integrated security and communications system combines a security system to either or both of a telephone system interface and a data interface. Users have access to voice-mail or other PBX-type telephone functions, many or all of which can be accessed not only at telephone sets, but also at keypads of the security system. Data functions such as electronic mail and possible partial or full World Wide Web access may also be provided at the keypads, as well as at connected personal computers or computer terminals. The system keypads may be enhanced to better accommodate some of the added functions. A central communications station could be used to maintain secure, shared private key encrypted communications with each premises system, using a redirector arrangement or relay to allow each premises system to communicate securely with a central monitoring station and with other systems. The secure communications system could be used without a security system to allow secure computer-to-computer communications.

A home or other building security system is interfaced with a vehicle control system, such as for an automobile. The vehicle control system includes a transceiver for receiving commands from the home security system for performing certain actions, such as arming or disarming an alarm system, unlocking or locking doors, opening or closing windows, and starting or stopping the engine. The vehicle control system also transmits status information regarding the vehicle to the home security system. The vehicle can be protected as a zone or partition of the home security system. Furthermore, a remote vehicle monitoring apparatus may be provided that triggers an alarm or annunciation based on its control mode when a change of status signal is received from the vehicle. The control mode is optionally tied to the status of a home security system.

The status may relate to an alarm status, armed status, or trouble code status. A user interface at the remote facility provides a spreadsheet format that allows a user to quickly ascertain the status of the security systems, and to send commands to the security systems. The security systems may be controlled individually or in groups, such as to add or delete authorizations. The user interface can filter or sort the information, or obtain further details. Other information, such as video and audio data from a security system, can also be provided to the remote facility for use in the user interface. Information can be recorded for subsequent playback.

A safety light is activated by a wireless signal from a control panel in a home security system is response to detection of a fire by the system. The safety light alerts rescuers of rooms in a home in which children may be located. The light may be window, door or wall-mounted, and have a single, or dual opposing, backlit faces. The backlit face includes a logo and/or text that is quickly recognized by rescuers. For example, a logo of a firefighter carrying a baby may be used with the text “tot rescue”. The safety light may communicate status information to the control panel, such as a low battery condition or a tamper alert. A tamper alert switch detects tampering with the housing of the safety light or its installation. Additional safety lights provide ambient illumination and directional information to an exit.

The notification system comprises a server for relaying the request for the remote status update, an access server for receiving the relayed request for the remote status update and for determining whether a remote device is registered to receive the remote status update, a host website for allowing the remote device to be registered to receive the remote status update, and a central monitoring server for generating the remote status update based upon the request. The central monitoring server is coupled to a remote security device. The security device is configured to detect an event and transmit a message to the central monitoring server in response to the detected event. The remote status update includes information regarding the detected event.
