Session Resource Manager And Method For Enhancing Visibility And Control Of A Broadband Network

View page
US Patent:
6608814, Aug 19, 2003
Filed:
Mar 12, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/267548
Inventors:
Roger Edward Libman - Naperville IL
Stephen Lee Myers - Aurora IL
Randall E. Pitt - Batavia IL
David W. Spears - Aurora IL
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
G01R 3108
US Classification:
370230, 3703952
Abstract:
In general, the SRM provides a network provider with visibility and control of its broadband network. A SRM connection manager receives setup signals to and from a subscriber and acts on them by analyzing the setup signals and by either comparing the setup signals to predefined rules, which are either static or dynamic, or modifying them. The access server provides intelligence to the SRM by verifying authentication information according to the connection managers database and continuously updating the connection manager database for further modification of the subscribers acquired session.

Telecommunications Signaling Arrangements For Terminals Without Signaling Capability

View page
US Patent:
56319037, May 20, 1997
Filed:
Nov 14, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/557885
Inventors:
Robert B. Dianda - Wheaton IL
Roger E. Libman - Naperville IL
Suzanne Vondruska - Aurora IL
Hsien-Chuen Yu - Naperville IL
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04L 1250
US Classification:
370401
Abstract:
An arrangement for generating and receiving standard telecommunications network signals on behalf of a terminal not equipped to generate or receive such signals. A controller shared by a plurality of such terminals receives signals from these terminals over a permanent virtual circuit (PVC) and uses the information received over the PVC to perform signaling. In a specific embodiment, the terminals are set top boxes, connected to a video cable, for controlling television sets. The controller controls signaling for establishing connections between the set top box and a video vendor system, and tunes the set top box to receive signals on the proper channel. Advantageously, such an arrangement significantly reduces the cost of the set top box while still allowing for a highly flexible signaling arrangement to the video vendor system.

Control Of Video Dialtone Connections

View page
US Patent:
57295450, Mar 17, 1998
Filed:
Jan 17, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/588673
Inventors:
Roger Edward Libman - Naperville IL
Assignee:
Lucent Technolgies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04L 1200
US Classification:
370384
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for establishing a video dialtone connection between a customer's terminal, such as a set top terminal, and a server system, such as a video server. The connection is established via an access switch that is not part of a backbone broadband network. The backbone network is connected to the video server system and the access switch. A level one gateway controller controls establishment of the connection by establishing a connection between the server system and the access switch using the backbone network. A separate connection is then established between the path to the access switch and a circuit through the access switch to the customer terminal. Advantageously, the access switch need not be a part of the backbone network, an arrangement that is desirable for serving consumer type customers. The connection to the access switch is treated by the backbone network essentially as if it were a connection to a terminal or any of a group of terminals.
