Gear Selection Assembly With Nested Differentially Rotatable Tube

View page
US Patent:
7997159, Aug 16, 2011
Filed:
Oct 25, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/924081
Inventors:
Jeffrey Hemphill - Copley OH, US
Mavinkal Jayaram - Broadview Heights OH, US
Brian Lee - York SC, US
Robert Southam - Tega Cay SC, US
Assignee:
Schaeffler KG - Herzogenaurach
International Classification:
F16H 59/00
F16H 61/00
F16H 63/00
F16H 3/38
F16H 3/08
F16H 3/44
US Classification:
74339, 74371, 74372, 743375, 475298
Abstract:
The present invention broadly comprises a gear selector assembly including a tube with at least one engagement feature, arranged to be disposed within a drive shaft for a transmission, the transmission including at least one gear and the drive shaft including at least one gear actuation assembly; and a differential rotation element coupled with the tube and arranged to be coupled with the drive shaft so that the tube is differentially rotatable with respect to the drive shaft. The tube is arranged to differentially rotate such that the engagement feature engages the actuation assembly and the transmission engages a respective gear from the at least one gear. The assembly includes a means for displacing a portion of the differential rotation element such that the tube axially and rotationally displaces with respect to the drive shaft. The portion axially and rotationally engages with an interface element to controllably position the tube.

Thermal Compensation Element With Wave Spring

US Patent:
20120195537, Aug 2, 2012
Filed:
Jan 27, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/359788
Inventors:
Marion Jack INCE - MOUNT HOLLY NC, US
Guihui ZHONG - CHARLOTTE NC, US
Robert SOUTHAM - TEGA CAY SC, US
Charles SCHWAB - FORT MILL SC, US
Michael TURNER - FORT MILL SC, US
Brian LEE - YORK SC, US
Assignee:
SCHAEFFLER TECHNOLOGIES AG & CO. KG - Herzogenaurach
International Classification:
F16C 25/08
F16C 33/30
US Classification:
384493
Abstract:
A thermal compensation element which has an inner ring, an outer ring, and a washer. The washer is arranged within the inner ring and the outer ring is mounted over the inner ring, encapsulating the washer, which can be a split wave spring. The inner ring and the outer ring each have retention features to ensure they are retained relative to each other. The thermal compensation, which is positioned between a housing or a shaft, can account for variations in loading and/or temperature that may occur to a bearing and a shaft system when the shaft and an associated component are made of different materials and have different coefficients of thermal expansion by ensuring a proper axial preload is maintained on the bearing.

Engine Valve And Method For Making The Same

View page
US Patent:
58231587, Oct 20, 1998
Filed:
Oct 16, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/950103
Inventors:
Rudy J. Heimann - Brunswick OH
Victor D. Levin - Highland Heights OH
William Neumann - Lakewood OH
Joseph L. Palko - Strongsville OH
Robert E. Southam - Hudson OH
Assignee:
TRW Inc. - Lyndhurst OH
International Classification:
F02M 300
US Classification:
1231883
Abstract:
A first part of an engine valve (10) is centered on an axis (A) and comprises a hollow metal member (100) having an outwardly flared first end portion (102) and a second end portion (104). The hollow metal member (100) has a chamber (106) extending axially throughout the member. The chamber (106) is open at the first end portion (102). A second part of the engine valve (10) is centered on the axis (A) and comprises a metal piece (130) coaxial with the hollow metal member (100). The metal piece (130) has first and second ends (132 and 134). The first end (132) has a first weld connection to the second end portion (104) of the hollow metal member (100). The metal piece (130) has a solid cross-section portion between the first and second ends (132 and 134). The metal piece (130) has a circumferential groove (150) in the solid cross-section portion. A metal cap (160) has a periphery (166) and a second weld connection (172) at the periphery to the outwardly flared first end portion (104) of the hollow metal member (100).

Poppet Valve With Embossed Neck Structure

View page
US Patent:
57718520, Jun 30, 1998
Filed:
Mar 4, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/811334
Inventors:
Rudy J. Heimann - Brunswick OH
Victor D. Levin - Highland Hts. OH
William Neumann - Lakewood OH
Joseph L. Palko - Strongsville OH
Robert E. Southam - Hudson OH
Assignee:
TRW Inc. - Lyndhurst OH
International Classification:
F01L 320
US Classification:
1231883
Abstract:
A poppet valve (10) has a disk-shaped head (12), an elongated stem (16), and a tapered neck (24) between the head (12) and the stem (16). The neck (24) has an outer surface (32) with an undulating circumferential contour. The undulating circumferential contour improves component strength and heat transfer efficiency, and may also influence valve rotation and inlet charge swirl.
