Peelaway Type Rollover Valve Element

View page
US Patent:
6371146, Apr 16, 2002
Filed:
Nov 7, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/707480
Inventors:
Robert P. Benjey - Dexter MI
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16K 2404
US Classification:
137 2, 137202
Abstract:
An improved fuel level responsive peelaway action valve for vehicle fuel tanks, in which a float moves a valve closure element into sealing contact with a vapor venting outlet, and then pulls or âpeelsâ the valve element off the vapor venting outlet when fuel level drops. The valve closure element comprises a thin, flexible sealing portion for engaging the vapor venting outlet with low sealing forces, and a stiffened marginal portion acted on by a rigid cage or frame which is connected to the float. As the float drops, the cage contacts the stiffened marginal portion and levers the valve element off the venting outlet.

Method Of Controlling Vapor Venting In A Fuel Tank And Valve Therefor

View page
US Patent:
6371152, Apr 16, 2002
Filed:
Feb 9, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/501029
Inventors:
Robert P. Benjey - Dexter MI
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16K 2404
US Classification:
137202, 137 43
Abstract:
A float type vapor vent valve for a vehicle fuel tank. A relatively thin flexible valve member has one end anchored to the float but permitted relative movement with respect to the float in a direction parallel to that of float movement, with the opposite end of the flexible valve member anchored to the float in spaced arrangement from the one end, but permitted limited movement with respect to the float in a direction normal to that of float movement. The flexible arm is bowed in one version and has a flat configuration in another version.

Noise Dampened Float Type Fuel Vapor Vent Valve

View page
US Patent:
6405766, Jun 18, 2002
Filed:
Nov 29, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/726234
Inventors:
Robert P. Benjey - Dexter MI
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16K 1700
US Classification:
141198, 141 7, 141 52, 141 59, 141303, 137 43, 137202
Abstract:
A float operated fuel tank vapor vent valve having a reduced diameter portion on the bottom of the float which forms a tapered surface. The tapered surface contacts a plurality of spaced resilient fingers when the float drops suddenly; and the float motion is thus arrested silently by deflection of the resilient fingers.

Fuel Tank Vapor Vent Valve Assembly And Method Of Making Same

View page
US Patent:
6484741, Nov 26, 2002
Filed:
Feb 26, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/794428
Inventors:
Robert P. Benjey - Dexter MI
Gill E. Eisenstein - Lake Zurich IL
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16K 2404
US Classification:
137 1526, 137202, 137587
Abstract:
A fuel vapor vent valve and method of making same for installation in an access opening of non-metallic fuel tanks. The valve body is formed of material not weldable to the tanks and an annular seal member formed of resilient material seals between the body upper portion exterior to the access opening and an overmold formed of material weldable to the tanks for retaining and sealing the valve thereon. In one embodiment the seal member is received in a groove and retained by a ring; and, in another embodiment the seal is formed by potting material cured in the groove prior to the overmolding.

Low Permeation Cam Lock For Plastic Fuel Tank Vapor Vent Valve

View page
US Patent:
6637778, Oct 28, 2003
Filed:
Nov 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/990057
Inventors:
Robert P. Benjey - Dexter MI
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16L 4100
US Classification:
285209, 285305, 403320
Abstract:
A vapor vent valve has an annular locking ring received thereover, with surfaces thereon engaging the valve for limited axial movement therebetween and preventing relative rotation therebetween. A fuel tank has an access opening with a slit formed therein. The valve is inserted in the access opening and the end of the locking ring engaged in the slit, rotation of the valve causes the locking ring to feed completely through the slit to the interior of the tank and engages the inner surface thereof while continuing to engage the valve to retain and seal the valve in the access opening. The valve, locking ring and a seal ring may be pre-assembled to form a subassembly capable of being installed and locked on the fuel tank as a unit without the need for tools or fasteners.

Filler Tube Mounted Fuel Tank Refueling Valve

View page
US Patent:
6837256, Jan 4, 2005
Filed:
Sep 17, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/245217
Inventors:
Robert P. Benjey - Dexter MI, US
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16K 3118
B65B 130
US Classification:
137 1526, 137420, 137421, 137495, 1375122, 141198, 251 74, 251294
Abstract:
A spring loaded valve member with a poppet on one end is disposed in a fuel tank with the inlet end connected to the filler tube. The valve member has a spool valve attached to the poppet. The poppet is opened by fuel discharging from a refueling nozzle and the valve member movement limited by a float operated latch such that fuel flows through the spool valve ports. Upon the float rising in the tank, the latch is released permitting the force of the flowing fuel to further move the valve member to close the spool valve.

Electrically Controlled Refueling Vapor Vent Shutoff

View page
US Patent:
6854492, Feb 15, 2005
Filed:
Dec 3, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/308789
Inventors:
Robert P. Benjey - Dexter MI, US
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
B65B031/00
US Classification:
141198, 141 2, 141 52, 141 59, 141308, 123519, 137588
Abstract:
An electrically operated valve is connected in the vapor recirculation line from a float operated vent valve, or a direct vapor recirculation line from the tank top to the upper end of the tank filler tube. The electrically operated valve is actuated by an electronic controller (ECU) which receives a fuel level signal either from the float operated level sender or from a thermistor located in the tank adjacent the top wall of the tank.

Fuel Vapor Vent System And Low Permeation Vacuum Operated Shut-Off Valve Therefor

View page
US Patent:
6874484, Apr 5, 2005
Filed:
Dec 3, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/308402
Inventors:
Robert P. Benjey - Dexter MI, US
Assignee:
Eaton Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F02M033/02
US Classification:
123520, 137907
Abstract:
A vacuum operated flow control valve is disposed in the vapor vent line from a fuel tank to a vapor storage canister connected also to the engine air inlet. The valve has a diaphragm operator of low permeability which is biased normally open to permit fuel vapor to flow from the tank to the canister during engine shutdown. Upon engine startup a vacuum is drawn in the canister and the flow control valve which closes preventing vacuum being drawn in the tank thereby preventing tank collapse. During engine shutdown, if an ambient temperature drop creates a vacuum in the tank, the flow control valve closes; however, an emergency umbrella relief valve opens permitting reverse flow of vapor from the canister to the tank preventing excessive vacuum in the tank.
