Retainer System For Vehicle Soft Tops And Tonneau Covers

View page
US Patent:
6688668, Feb 10, 2004
Filed:
Oct 29, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/282427
Inventors:
Michael C. Stevens - Arvada CO
Rick H. Troeger - Westminster CO
Nancy L. Brunner - late of Broomfield CO
Timothy J. Gile - Loveland CO
Assignee:
Bestop, Inc. - Broomfield CO
International Classification:
B60P 704
US Classification:
29610016, 29610001, 29610018
Abstract:
A retainer system for vehicle soft tops and tonneau covers. The system includes a belt attached to the edge of the fabric of the top or tonneau cover and a channel member mounted on the vehicle to selectively receive the belt. The belt is provided with a stop mechanism to positively prevent the belt from peeling out of the retaining channel member farther than desired. In the preferred embodiments, the stop mechanism is a notch or cutout in the belt. With the present retainer system, the notch will effectively stop the peel or withdrawal of the belt from the retaining channel at a predetermined location along the channel. In this manner, the belt and attached top or tonneau cover can be partially removed from engagement along the channel member to make it easier and quicker for the operator to perform a number of desirable tasks.

US Patent:
7029052, Apr 18, 2006
Filed:
Mar 19, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/804716
Inventors:
Rick H. Troeger - Westminster CO, US
Joseph C. Jacobucci - Brighton CO, US
Timothy J. Gile - Loveland CO, US
Bryan Early - Brighton CO, US

The frame has front and rear bow members with the rear bow member mounted for rotation about a first, fixed axis. The front bow member is pivotally mounted to the side legs of the rear bow member for movement about a second axis spaced from the first axis. The front bow member can be moved with the rear bow member about the fixed axis and also pivotally moved relative to the rear bow member about the second axis. Abstract:
The present invention is a serviceable fabric assembly for a convertible roof of a motor vehicle having a retainer connected to a fabric cover and slidably engaged within a channel formed in a first bow member. The first bow member has an upper panel and a lower panel configured to form the channel substantially along the longitudinal length of the first bow member. The channel is configured to laterally receive a compressible portion of the retainer which prevents the retainer from exiting the channel in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the first bow member. A gap is formed near at least one end of the channel on the outboard side of the channel and is sized such that an operator can slide the retainer out of the channel through the gap for servicing and replacing the fabric cover without having to disassemble the first bow member.
