Fluid-Filled Mattress Construction

View page
US Patent:
51375923, Aug 11, 1992
Filed:
Feb 5, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/650687
Inventors:
Richard LaBianco - Santa Ana CA
International Classification:
B32B 3110
US Classification:
156290
Abstract:
A fluid-filled mattress construction having an outer cover separated by a plurality of vertically extending generally I-beam shaped ribs. The ribs include a vertical web and upper and lower horizontal flaps. The mid-portion of the flaps are formed with a bead. When the walls of the cover are compressed against the ribs during the fabrication operation, the bead ensures a positive bonding of the cover walls to the rib flaps and reduces the potential degradation of or separation of the cover from the ribs.

Interlocking Foam Waterbed Mattress

View page
US Patent:
52896013, Mar 1, 1994
Filed:
Jul 13, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/379638
Inventors:
Richard A. LaBianco - Corona Del Mar CA
International Classification:
A47C 2708
US Classification:
5451
Abstract:
A waterbed mattress having an inner frame formed with a bladder cavity encircled by an outer foam frame which covers the bladder cavity and extends downwardly to define the sides and ends of the mattress. An interlocking complementary protrusion and recess connection are interposed between the inner and outer frames to permit the peripheral portion of the outer frame and inner frames to be lifted sufficiently that bedding may be tucked thereunder. The outer frame is then lowered and the weight of the bladder is transferred by the connection to the outer frame so as to securely hold the bedding in place. The connection is releasable to permit the upper frame to be lifted off the lower frame for access to the bladder cavity.

Wave-Reducing Baffle For Water Beds

View page
US Patent:
44621280, Jul 31, 1984
Filed:
Jan 9, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/223699
Inventors:
Richard A. LaBianco - Newport Beach CA
International Classification:
A47C 2708
US Classification:
5450
Abstract:
A wave-reducing water mattress for water beds has a wave-reducing baffle comprising a flexible fibrous layer, preferably of polyester fibers, occupying a major portion of the horizontal area traversed by the water-filled mattress. The fibrous layer resists flow of water within the mattress so as to restrict wave motion within the mattress. The baffle preferably includes a low-density layer that floats the fibrous layer next to the top surface of the water-filled mattress for restricting topical wave motion at the top surface of the mattress. In one embodiment, the baffle comprises a pair of thin vertically spaced apart upper and lower fibrous layers and a thin low-density, non-water absorptive foam layer between the fibrous layers for floating the upper fibrous layer next to the top surface of the mattress, while the lower fibrous layer "anchors" the baffle within the mattress, without the baffle being attached or sealed to the wall of the mattress. Wave motion generated within the mattress is dampened in a water-filled chamber formed between the lower fibrous layer and the floating upper fibrous layer. In another embodiment, the lower fibrous layer and the floating upper fibrous layer are held in place spaced apart with respect to one another by a series of ties or button tufting mono-filament strings which resist wave forces generated within the inner chamber by preventing the two layers from expanding further than the strings allow.

Water Bed

View page
US Patent:
40578623, Nov 15, 1977
Filed:
May 24, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/688961
Inventors:
Richard A. LaBianco - South Pasadena CA
International Classification:
A47C 2708
US Classification:
5370
Abstract:
A water bed includes a water-filled bladder resting upon a base having a semi-flexible outer framework providing lateral support for the periphery of the bladder. The outer framework is divided into a lower wedge-shaped portion affixed to the base, and a movable wedge-shaped upper portion resting on the lower wedge and hinged to the base along the inside edge of the lower wedge. The periphery of the water-filled bladder rests against an inclined inside supporting surface provided by the upper wedge. The upper wedge pivots away from the lower wedge toward the bladder to allow access to an elongated open space extending around the outer framework between the wedges. A cushioned cover sheet overlies the bladder, and a flexible skirt extends downwardly around the periphery of the cover sheet. The skirt is fitted into the space between the upper and lower wedges. Fastening means on the skirt are releasably attached to corresponding fastening means between the wedges for applying an adjustable tension to the cover sheet which, in turn, controls the characteristics of the fluid support provided by the water-filled bladder.
