Abstract:
Methods are disclosed for preparing a highly active solid metallocene-containing catalyst system and its use in the polymerization of olefins. The catalyst system is prepared by creating a catalyst system solution by combining an aluminoxane with a metallocene having a substituent which has olefinic unsaturation in an aliphatic liquid to form a liquid catalyst system, conducting prepolymerization of an olefin in the liquid catalyst system, preferably in multiple stages, and separating the resulting solid metallocene-containing catalyst system from the reaction mixture. Also polymerization of olefins using the inventive solid catalyst system is disclosed.

US Patent:
62390600, May 29, 2001
Filed:
Dec 31, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/224176
Inventors:
David W. Dockter - Bartlesville OK
Bryan E. Hauger - Bartlesville OK
M. Bruce Welch - Bartlesville OK
Randall S. Muninger - Bartlesville OK
Assignee:
Phillips Petroleum Company - Bartlesville OK
International Classification:
B01J 3502
US Classification:
502120
Abstract:
The present invention provides a new type of supported metallocene catalyst system. In one aspect of the invention, an inorganic oxide support, such as silica, is impregnated with a Group XIII element such as B, Al or GA. The support is then contacted with a liquid catalyst system prepared by combining in a liquid an organo aluminoxane and a metallocene having two cyclopetadienyl-type ligands selected from substituted or unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, benzoindenyl, tetrahdroindenyl, benzofluorenyl, octahydrofluorenyl, and fluorenyl ligands to form a supported metallocene catalyst system. In preferred embodiments the process further includes conducting prepolymerization of at least one olefin in the presence of the supported metallocene catalyst system to produce a prepolymerized metallocene catalyst system. The prepolymerized metallocene catalyst system prepared in this manner yields substantially increased activity for the polymerization of olefins. In another aspect, the present invention also provides a method for polymerization of olefins using the inventive supported metallocene catalyst system.

Ashish M. Sukhadia - Bartlesville OK, US
Youlu Yu - Bartlesville OK, US

Christopher E. Wittner - Dewey OK, US
International Classification:
C08L 23/08
C08F 4/6592
C08F 210/16
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are ethylene-based polymers generally characterized by a melt index of less than 15 g/10 min, a density from 0.91 to 0.945 g/cm, a CY-a parameter at 190 C. from 0.2 to 0.6, an average number of long chain branches per 1,000,000 total carbon atoms of the polymer in a molecular weight range of 500,000 to 2,000,000 g/mol of less than 5, and a maximum ratio of ηη at an extensional rate of 0.03 secin a range from 3 to 15. The ethylene polymers have substantially no long chain branching in the high molecular weight fraction of the polymer, but instead have significant long chain branching in the lower molecular weight fraction, such that polymer melt strength and bubble stability are maintained for the fabrication of blown films and other articles of manufacture. These ethylene polymers can be produced using a dual catalyst system containing a single atom bridged metallocene compound with an indenyl group and a cyclopentadienyl group, and an unbridged hafnium metallocene compound with two cyclopentadienyl groups.

Abstract:
Disclosed are metallocene compounds, catalyst compositions comprising a metallocene compound, processes for polymerizing olefins, methods for making catalyst compositions, olefin polymers and articles made from olefin polymers. In an aspect, a metallocene compounds contain a fluorenyl ligand and a cyclopentadienyl ligand which are bridged by a linking group, in which the metallocene is characterized by [1] the cyclopentadienyl ligand being substituted with a C-Cheterohydrocarbyl group having an oxygen atom positioned 5 atoms distance or less from the cyclopentadienyl ligand and [2] the linking group having a pendant C-Calkenyl group having a terminal C═C double bond. It has been discovered that a catalyst composition comprising a metallocene compound having these features can produce polyethylene having a low melt index in the absence of a second metallocene.
