Oxidation Treatment Of A Recycle Stream In Production Of Acetic Acid By Methanol Carbonylation

View page
US Patent:
20030199711, Oct 23, 2003
Filed:
Apr 16, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/124200
Inventors:
Jerry Broussard - Marietta GA, US
Stephen Houliston - Ottumwa IA, US
Michael Huckman - Corpus Christi TX, US
Peggy McKarns MacAtangay - Corpus Christi TX, US
Madan Singh - Corpus Christi TX, US
Michael Karnilaw - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
C07C051/12
US Classification:
562/519000
Abstract:
A method and system is provided for producing acetic acid by the catalytic carbonylation of methanol with carbon monoxide to obtain a reaction product stream comprising acetic acid and a minor amount of acetaldehyde. The acetaldehyde content in the reaction product stream is reduced by oxidation to convert at least a portion of the acetaldehyde in the stream to acetic acid or further to COand HO. The oxidized stream may then be directed to the purification section, the reaction section, or both whereby the deleterious effects of acetaldehyde are reduced. Advantage of the present invention over conventional processes is the reduced need to dispose of acetaldehyde as waste and improved overall system efficiency in the production of acetic acid.

C08F 2/00
C08F 236/08
C08F 212/08
C08F 4/14
C08F 2/01
Abstract:
Non-random isobutylene copolymer includes repeat units derived from isobutylene and one or more comonomers selected from isoprene, butadiene, cyclopentadiene, dicyclopentadiene, limonene, substituted styrenes, and C4 to C10 dienes other than isoprene, butadiene, limonene, cyclopentadiene, or dicyclopentadiene, wherein the molar ratio of isobutylene derived repeat units to the comonomer derived repeat units is from 75:1 to 1.5:1. The non-random copolymers have a molecular weight, Mn, of from 200 to 20,000 Daltons and typically have a high double bond content and a high vinylidene double bond content when diene monomers are utilized.
