Method And Apparatus For Stacking Tortilla Chips

View page
US Patent:
6338606, Jan 15, 2002
Filed:
Jun 7, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/326682
Inventors:
Patrick J. Bierschenk - Dallas TX
Steven D. Braithwaite - Allen TX
John J. Michels - Highland Village TX
Assignee:
Recot, Inc. - Pleasanton CA
International Classification:
B65G 5716
US Classification:
4147882, 4147889, 4147984, 198360, 198406
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for stacking curved, triangular snack food chips, e. g. , tortilla chips, for packaging in a sleeve-type container. The chips are fed into a first, U-shaped vibratory chute, which automatically causes the apex corners of the chips to extend beyond the opposing base edges of adjacent chips and which automatically orients the chips such that lines about which they are curved are oriented parallel to the longitudinal direction of the U-shaped chute. The chips are then fed into a W-shaped chute, with the chips facing in opposite directions falling automatically into opposite troughs of the W-shaped chute. The chips are then automatically reoriented by 120Â such that their upturned apex corners point in the direction of travel, and the chips are stacked automatically as they slide up along one another in a shingled manner.

US Patent:
6473718, Oct 29, 2002
Filed:
Nov 4, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/436826
Inventors:
Patrick Joseph Bierschenk - Dallas TX
Boderick Gerard Hall - Highland Village TX
Joseph Paul Sagel - Highland Village TX
Assignee:
Recct, Inc. - Pleasanton CA
International Classification:
G06F 1500

Abstract:
A method for determining bag size to adequately accommodate a food product filled into a ba y a form and fill machine, and subsequently determining the appropriate case pack configuration. The method efficiently and accurately determines a bag size that is large enough to accommodate the product that falls into the bag without interfering with the sealing process of the bag and while determining the appropriate amount of fill within the bag. The method uses various empirically determined relationships from historical bag sizing trials for a specific product and applies these relationships to a series of models in order to solve for a bag length. The method eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming bag sizing trials.
