Buck Or Boost Power Converter

View page
US Patent:
6348781, Feb 19, 2002
Filed:
Dec 11, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/733722
Inventors:
Pallab Midya - Schaumburg IL
Lawrence E. Connell - Naperville IL
Kenneth R. Haddad - Arlington Heights IL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G05F 1613
US Classification:
323224, 323283, 323259, 323222
Abstract:
A buck or boost (BOB) power converter circuit. A buck converter is cascaded with a boost converter to form a buck or boost circuit ( ). The BOB converter is controlled by a controller ( ) such that only the buck or boost converter is operating at any given time. A reference signal V can be applied to the controller ( ) such that the output voltage from the converter closely tracks the reference signal. Positive and negative ramp signals are generated and an error feedback signal is compared with the ramp signals to control the output in accord with V. This is useful in application of the output voltage as the power supply to an RF Power Amplifier ( ) so that the reference signal can represent the envelope of a signal to be transmitted and the RF PA ( ) can operate at high efficiency.

Abstract:
A method for preserving phase information during quantization of pulse width modulation (PWM) signals used in power system applications. In one embodiment, a digital audio amplifier ( ) implements a method of noise shaping, where the quantization error is used in coordination with a noise shaping filter ( ) to remove the noise from the desired baseband of the output. A phase-preserving expression is used to provide additional information for generating the amplified output ( ). In one embodiment, the filter ( ) includes a series of integrators ( ), where non-linear integration terms are added at each stage of integration to provide the phase information. In one embodiment the filter is implemented in software to run on a digital signal processor, and in another the filter is implemented in a hardware accelerator.

Abstract:
A switching amplifier ( ) includes a power stage ( ) and a digital correction circuit ( ). The digital correction circuit ( ) is for correcting nonlinearity and power supply noise introduced into a digital signal during power stage amplification. The digital correction circuit ( ) receives a digital pulse modulated input signal from a processor ( ) and an amplified pulse modulated output signal from the power stage ( ), and performs a discrete-time pulse edge correction on the digital pulse modulated input signal to provide a corrected digital pulse modulated signal. The corrected digital pulse modulated signal is used as an input for the power stage ( ).

Natural Sampling Method And Device For Rf Pulse-Width Modulation

View page
US Patent:
6549085, Apr 15, 2003
Filed:
Nov 27, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/995122
Inventors:
Poojan A. Wagh - Sleepy Hollow IL
Pallab Midya - Palatine IL
Patrick Rakers - Kildeer IL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H03K 708
US Classification:
332109, 370212, 375238
Abstract:
A device for implementing a method for generating a pulse width modulated signal based upon a natural sampling technique is disclosed. First, a complex baseband signal is received by the device. Second, the device computes a first pulse edge vector and a second pulse edge vector as a function of the baseband signal. Third, the device computes a first set of natural sampling points as a function of the first pulse edge vector and computes a second set of natural sampling points as a function of the second pulse edge vector. These computations can involve one or more detections of a jump k within the first pulse edge vector and/or the second pulse edge vector. Finally, the pulse width modulated signal is generated with pulse edges corresponding to the first set of natural sampling points and the second set of natural sampling points.

Patrick Rakers - Kildeer IL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H03B 104
US Classification:

Abstract:
A modulated signal source for implementing A modulated signal method of a generating a modulated signal having a radio frequency based upon a linear mixing of signals is disclosed. An in-phase pulse signal modulator of the modulated signal source provides an in-phase pulse modulated signal in response to a reception of a baseband in-phase signal and an in-phase clock signal with the in-phase clock signal and the in-phase pulse modulated signal being synchronized. A quadrature pulse signal modulator of the modulated signal source provides a quadrature pulse modulated signal in response to a reception of a baseband quadrature signal and a quadrature clock signal with the quadrature clock signal and the quadrature pulse modulated signal being synchronized. Circuitry For Creating A Spectral Null In A Differential Output Switching Amplifier And Method Therefor

View page
US Patent:
6605991, Aug 12, 2003
Filed:
Aug 30, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/943177
Inventors:
Pallab Midya - Schaumburg IL
William Roeckner - Carpentersville IL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H03F 338
US Classification:
330 10, 330207 A, 330251
Abstract:
A modulated signal is connected to a full bridge switching amplifier ( ) and is compensated to remove a predetermined frequency and its odd harmonics. The compensation inverts and delays ( ) a signal that is connected to a first half of the full bridge and applies the delayed inverted signal to a second half of the full bridge. By delaying by an odd number of half cycles, the carrier and its odd harmonics are cancelled because the same signal exists on both sides of the full bridge output. When these two same signals are subtracted by the full bridge action, the carrier and odd harmonics are suppressed. Spectral nulls may be provided for various signal applications, not just audio, and when various types of modulation techniques are used, such as PWM and PDM.
