System And Method For Power Application To An Information Handling System

View page
US Patent:
7378755, May 27, 2008
Filed:
Mar 31, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/096132
Inventors:
Patrick Desbois - Austin TX, US
Mohammed K. Hijazi - Austin TX, US
Richard M. Tonry - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
H02J 1/00
US Classification:
307 38
Abstract:
An information handling system AC-to-DC adapter provides a low DC power output on initial application of an AC power input. The low DC power output supports communication between the adapter and the information handling system of adapter identification information. The information handling system confirms a proper connection with the adapter and sends an authorization to the adapter to output a high DC power output. The adapter monitors the connection with the information handling system to disable the high DC power output if not needed, such as if the information handling system is disconnected from the adapter or reaches a fully charged battery state.

Sep 26, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/527126
Inventors:
Shiguo Luo - Austin TX, US
John J. Breen - Harker Heights TX, US
Mohammed K. Hijazi - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
H01M 10/46
US Classification:
320115
Abstract:
Systems and methods for interfacing a battery system of a battery-powered keyboard system with main battery components of a battery-powered information handling system to enable a battery charging system of the battery-powered information handling system to charge both the main battery pack of the battery-powered information handling system and the battery pack of the battery-powered keyboard system without the presence of a separate stand-alone battery charger in the battery-powered keyboard system, and/or so that the keyboard battery of the battery-powered keyboard system may be used to supplement the main battery of the battery-powered information handling system such as in case of emergency power loss or to extend total battery life for running the information handling system.

Microprocessor Performance Mode Control Utilizing Sensed Temperature As An Indication Of Microprocessor Utilization

View page
US Patent:
7464277, Dec 9, 2008
Filed:
Jan 28, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/046433
Inventors:
Roberto Prosperi - Cedar Park TX, US
Mohammed Hijazi - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products, L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 1/00
G06F 1/26
G06F 1/32
US Classification:
713320, 713300, 713322
Abstract:
Methods and systems are disclosed for controlling microprocessor (CPU) performance modes utilizing sensed temperatures as an indication of CPU utilization. By recognizing that temperature can be used as an indication of CPU utilization, higher performance modes can be entered as temperature increases, and lower performance modes can be entered as temperature decreases.

Method And Apparatus For Extending Battery Life In Regulated Voltage Applications

View page
US Patent:
7471061, Dec 30, 2008
Filed:
Mar 21, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/385457
Inventors:
Shreya M. Shah - Austin TX, US
Mohammed Hijazi - Austin TX, US
Shiguo Luo - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
H02J 7/00
US Classification:
320107, 307 66
Abstract:
A technique is disclosed for more fully utilizing the full voltage range of a battery driven battery output voltage when the battery output voltage is provided through voltage regulation circuitry. More particularly, when the battery output voltage drops to a level that is insufficient to support the desired output of the voltage regulation circuitry, the battery output voltage may be coupled to the voltage output in a manner bypassing at least a portion of the voltage regulation circuitry. In this manner additional voltage range of the battery output voltage may be utilized while still maintaining an output voltage within a desired output voltage range. In one embodiment, such a technique may be utilized in an uninterruptible power supply system.

Information Handling System Capable Of Operating With A Power Adapter Having A Power Rating Lower Than The Information Handling System's Power Rating

View page
US Patent:
7583055, Sep 1, 2009
Filed:
Oct 14, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/965392
Inventors:
John J. Breen - Harker Heights TX, US
Mohammed K. Hijazi - Austin TX, US
Jay L. Taylor - Georgetown TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
H02J 7/00
H05K 7/00
US Classification:
320107, 320134, 361783, 710301, 710303
Abstract:
In response to detecting that a power adapter, having a first power rating lower than a second power rating of an information handling system (“IHS”), is coupled to the IHS and in response to a request indicating that the IHS is to be powered on, the power adapter is decoupled from the IHS so that the IHS receives power from a battery included by the IHS.

System And Method For Reserving Information Handling System Battery Charge To Perform Diagnostics

View page
US Patent:
7844844, Nov 30, 2010
Filed:
Jul 20, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/780529
Inventors:
Mohammed K. Hijazi - Austin TX, US
Matthew Torgerson - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 1/00
H02J 7/00
G01N 27/416

US Classification:
713323, 713340, 320107, 320137, 324426, 702 63
Abstract:
A power diagnostics module running on an information handling system initiates a power down state of the information handling system upon detection of a predetermined battery charge that is sufficient to allow the information handling system to recover from the power down state and run the power diagnostics module. The power diagnostics module runs on the predetermined charge to diagnose faults associated with the power system, such as failure of an external AC adapter, and to present the faults to an end user, such as at a display, with LEDs or through a network message.

Soft Start With Active Reset

View page
US Patent:
8327165, Dec 4, 2012
Filed:
Jan 21, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/691351
Inventors:
Joseph Alexander Clegg - Round Rock TX, US
Mohammed K. Hijazi - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 1/00
US Classification:
713300
Abstract:
A power supply input circuit includes an input node configured to removeably couple to an electrical source. A solid state switch is coupled between the input node and a capacitive load. An RC soft start circuit is coupled to the input node and the switch. The soft start circuit has a capacitor that causes the switch to increasingly pass electrical power from the source to the load as the capacitor charges from the source. An active reset circuit is coupled to the soft start circuit. The reset circuit is configured to detect when the source is removed from the input node and in response to the source being removed from the input node, the reset circuit discharges the capacitor to reset the soft start circuit.
