Systems And Methods For Disk Drive Access Under Changes In Environmental Parameters

View page
US Patent:
20060156024, Jul 13, 2006
Filed:
Oct 28, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/261031
Inventors:
Fernando Zayas - Loveland CO, US
Mine Budiman - Livermore CA, US
Assignee:
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. - Osaka
International Classification:
H04L 9/00
H04K 1/00
US Classification:
713182000
Abstract:
The present invention provides novel approaches to control access to hard disk drive based on surrounding environments. It first detects one or more environmental parameters surrounding the drive and/or an appliance, then blocks access to the drive when one or more conditions are unfavorable. This description is not intended to be a complete description of, or limit the scope of, the invention. Other features, aspects, and objects of the invention can be obtained from a review of the specification, the figures, and the claims.

Method For Saving Self-Test Output To Both Flash And Media

View page
US Patent:
20050154950, Jul 14, 2005
Filed:
Jul 15, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/891841
Inventors:
Mine Budiman - Livermore CA, US
Helen Clint - San Jose CA, US
Stephen Paul - Santa Cruz CA, US
Fernando Zayas - Loveland CO, US
International Classification:
G01R031/28
US Classification:
714733000
Abstract:
A hard disk drive includes a flash memory and a rotatable disk. During self-test, self-test data is written first to flash and then later written to the rotatable disk. Since the self-test data is stored in the flash, if there is a power failure the hard disk drive can recover without repeating the test.

Power State Change In Disk Drive Based On Disk Access History

View page
US Patent:
20160283155, Sep 29, 2016
Filed:
Jun 2, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/172072
Inventors:
- Tokyo, JP
Eric R. DUNN - Cupertino CA, US
Daniel TCHEN - San Jose CA, US
Annie Mylang LE - San Jose CA, US
Mine Wonkyung BUDIMAN - Livermore CA, US
Fernando Anibal ZAYAS - Rangiora, NZ
International Classification:
G06F 3/06
Abstract:
A data storage device that includes a magnetic storage device selects one or more power states of the magnetic storage device based on a time interval since a most recent time data has been read from or written to the magnetic storage device. The power state of the magnetic storage device can be changed from a higher power consumption state to a lower power consumption state when the time interval exceeds a predetermined value. The power consumption state may be changed from an active servo state to an intermediate power consumption state, a park state, and/or a standby state, depending on the time elapsed since the most recent time data has been read from or written to the magnetic storage device.

US Patent:
20150055243, Feb 26, 2015
Filed:
Aug 23, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/975207
Inventors:
- Tokyo, JP
Mine Wonkyung BUDIMAN - Livermore CA, US
Eric R. DUNN - Cupertino CA, US
Annie Mylang LE - San Jose CA, US
Fernando Anibal ZAYAS - Rangiora, NZ
Assignee:
KABUSHIKI KAISHA TOSHIBA - Tokyo
International Classification:
G11B 5/012
US Classification:
360 69
Abstract:
A data storage device that includes a magnetic storage device and a non-magnetic nonvolatile storage device that measures a hit rate of read/write commands that result in accesses to the non-magnetic nonvolatile storage device, and adjusts a length of a time period, such as an idle time, based on the hit rate. The duration of the time period can be set each time the magnetic storage device is accessed. Upon expiration of the time period, if the magnetic storage device has not yet been accessed, the magnetic storage device is changed from a higher power consumption state to a lower power consumption state.
