FROM: M.D. Stoakley Jr. SUBJECT: Application for employment with your Agency and/or department with your Law Enforcement Safety and Security Team. I am interested in becoming a member of your law enforcement team. From April 2002 until May 2003, I worked as a U.S. Air Marshall with the United States Civil Aviation/ Federal Marshal program. Ten years of experience as a U.S. Customs Inspector with the U.S Customs Service at the Port of Detroit and Detroit Metropolitan Airport, I have also worked as drug enforcement agent and enforcer of currency reporting requirements with U.S Customs. I have served in the Army, Military Police at the Intelligence training center which has more than prepared me for the position that I am applying for. I am confident that my years of experience, educational background, physical, and practical qualifications will prove to be an asset to your organization. 1. Self-Motivation Being self motivated is very important asset. The Customs Explorer program is for youth seeking a possible career in law enforcement. I volunteer my time and have served as an Associate Advisor for this group for five years. In this position, I have demonstrated my self-motivating skills as well as my skills to motivate others. As an Associate Advisor, my motivation was derived from teaching and training the Customs Explorers in various career-enhancing activities. Ive dedicated over one hundred hours of personal off duty time to the Explorers Program. This has given me the opportunity to remain in a motivating position and to motivate the students to remain focused and never give up. My self-motivation has also granted me the opportunity to enrich my skills as a Physical Fitness Trainer where I motivate myself to remain physically fit as well as motivate others to gain and maintain physical fitness. I applied for the volunteer position as Health Enhancement Coordinator for the Customs Service, and have been tentatively selected for the position. 2. Interpersonal Skills Working as a U.S. Air Marshall, Customs Inspector, and Military Police Officer, requires excellent interpersonal communication skills. I have the ability to interact with others and communicate in a professional manner while maintaining the dignity and ego of those that I communicate with on a daily basis. These skills are reflected through my daily interaction with the traveling public, supervisors, co-workers and airline personnel. Activities included defusing situations by giving clear explanations of the Customs Service rules and regulations in a comprehensive manner. I have also had the opportunity to assist the Passenger Service Representatives in dispersing Customs Service brochures to the public at the airport and at the Detroit Windsor Tunnel. 2. Interpersonal Skills I am currently a CMS Volunteer, I have proctored EOG test, assisted teachers on a weekly bases, and mentored a troubled group of 5th grade boy whom most did not have fathers at home. 3. Proficiency in utilizing computer Hardware, Software and Database programs Computer skills include the use of computer hardware and software. I am a proficient user of Microsoft Word, Excel, TECS and ACS databases used for Search and Seizure (SAS) reports (used at DTW), Incident Log reports (IOIL), and Memorandum of Information Received (MOIR). Mecklenburg criminal querys 4. Oral and written communication As a Customs Inspector, I have successfully interviewed passengers who were suspected of smuggling contraband into the United States. These interviews led to the arrest and or seizure of marijuana, hashish, undeclared merchandise, and currency. I was the seizing Officer in an Inbound / Outbound currency violation of [] USD at the Ambassador Bridge. This was one of the largest land border currency seizures in the Port of Detroit at that time. As an Associate Advisor for the Explorer Program, I am frequently required to speak to various high school students and their parents during Career Month in the Detroit Public Schools. Ive also participated in a National Focus Group on Racism in the work place, for the US Customs Service. I was praised by fellow inspectors and the mediator for the concise manner in which I discussed serious, emotional events, and problems in the work place. In the Charlotte area I have spoke at half-way houses, Churches and Islamic Masjid on Safety, Health and Fitness, and standing strong and being a man. I have displayed my written communication skills through my MOIR reports, SAS reports, IOIL reports, and through my applications for the Explorer Program, Health Coordinator, DMA Rover Team, and the former CET team. I have also rendered assistance to trainees in the completion of memos, and narratives for SAS reports Thank you for your consideration of my application.
