Magnetic Recording System With Single Coil For Thermally Assisted Writing

View page
US Patent:
6671127, Dec 30, 2003
Filed:
Jul 25, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/916094
Inventors:
Yimin Hsu - Sunnyvale CA
Andreas Moser - San Jose CA
Hemantha K. Wickramasinghe - San Jose CA
Xiao Z. Wu - San Jose CA
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G11B 5147
US Classification:
360123
Abstract:
A thermally-assisted magnetic recording (TAMR) write head simultaneously generates heat and a magnetic write field to the recording layer on a magnetic recording disk. The write head is located on the trailing face of a head carrier in a TAMR disk drive and comprises a single turn coil, part of which is a current strip having an edge located at the disk-facing surface of the head carrier. When write current is passed through the current strip heat is generated at the edge of the strip and a magnetic write field is induced at the disk surface. The strip edge has a predetermined width that substantially corresponds to the desired track width of the data bits. Because both heat and the magnetic write field are generated by the same element, the heat gradient and the magnetic write field gradient are co-located on the spot where the data bit is written.

Slider Having Integrated Lapping Guides

View page
US Patent:
6728067, Apr 27, 2004
Filed:
Jul 30, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/918699
Inventors:
Linden James Crawforth - San Jose CA
Huey-Ming Tzeng - San Jose CA
Xiao Wu - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.
International Classification:
G11B 560
US Classification:
3602343
Abstract:
A slider of a magnetic hard disk drive has one or more electric lapping guides in immediate proximity to the read/write stack of the slider. The lapping guides remain part of the slider during its operation. In the preferred embodiment, two essentially identical lapping guides are symmetrically placed on a slider back. One write head terminal is utilized to conductively access the two lapping guides on one side such that only one additional terminal has to be placed on the slider back together with corresponding leads. The placement of lapping guides on the slider back face provides for an economic lapping of individual sliders with increased precision and reliability regardless of any lapping plane skew.

Pattern-Electroplated Lapping Plates For Reduced Loads During Single Slider Lapping And Process For Their Fabrication

View page
US Patent:
6802761, Oct 12, 2004
Filed:
Mar 20, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/392630
Inventors:
Jacey R. Beaucage - San Jose CA
Timothy C. Reiley - Los Gatos CA
Huey-Ming Tzeng - San Jose CA
Xiao Z. Wu - San Jose CA
Assignee:
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V. - Amsterdam
International Classification:
B24B 100
US Classification:
451 28, 451550
Abstract:
A lapping plate has photolithographically defined patterns that are electroplated to produce lands with well-defined channels. By choosing a particular geometry, the retention force is significantly reduced over prior art options, while still retaining a high land area fraction. In some versions, the material is electroplated onto sufficiently thin substrates to allow conformation to a curved vacuum chuck. This configuration provides a very large reduction in retraction force when compared to smooth, flat lapping plates. In addition, the substrate used to form the lapping plate has reduced thickness, and a vacuum chuck is used to pull the thin, flat lapping plate against it to define the curvature. This allows the lapping plate to be charged by a flat charging ring. The substrate used is typically glass and has been sputter-metallized on both sides.

Methods Of Manufacturing Sliders

View page
US Patent:
6994608, Feb 7, 2006
Filed:
Nov 12, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/987432
Inventors:
Huey-Ming Tzeng - San Jose CA, US
Xiao Z. Wu - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands, B.V.
International Classification:
B24B 49/04
US Classification:
451 5, 451 57
Abstract:
Methods of manufacturing sliders are disclosed. In one method, a wafer of sliders is parted into rows of sliders. Each row includes a plurality of sliders connected by kerfs. For an individual row, the kerfs between the sliders are partially parted from a flex side of the row. The flex side of the row is opposite an air bearing surface (ABS) side of the row. The depth of partially parting the kerfs corresponds with a lapping depth for lapping the row. The row is then lapped from the air bearing surface side to remove the remaining kerfs between the sliders to separate the row into individual sliders.

Slider Fabrication System For Sliders With Integrated Electrical Lapping Guides

View page
US Patent:
7014530, Mar 21, 2006
Filed:
Sep 29, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/675043
Inventors:
Prakash Kasiraj - San Jose CA, US
Quang Le - San Jose CA, US
Huey Tzeng - San Jose CA, US
Xiao Z. Wu - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V. - Amsterdam
International Classification:
B24B 49/00
US Classification:
451 8, 451 41
Abstract:
A slider is described with a resistive electro-lapping guide (ELG), which is aligned with a structure in the write head such as the throat height or trailing shield thickness and extends from the lapping region through the ABS and is connected to pads on the surface of the slider. In a second embodiment the ELG is disposed entirely in the section of the slider which will be removed by lapping. Another embodiment of the invention is a system for single slider lapping which simultaneously monitors the resistance of the read sensor or a read head ELG and at least one ELG that is aligned with a structure in the write head. A controller uses the resistance information to implement an algorithm which decides when lapping should be terminated.

Jul 27, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/881623
Inventors:
Jacey Robert Beaucage - San Jose CA, US
Linden J. Crawforth - San Jose CA, US
Xiao Z. Wu - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V. - Amsterdam
International Classification:
B23P 19/00
G11C 5/12
US Classification:
29737, 2960309, 2960312, 2960323, 451 5, 451 10, 451 36, 451 41
Abstract:
The lapping of a slider is controlled based on an amplitude of a readback signal which is produced from an externally applied magnetic field. A lapping plate is used to lap a slider which includes at least one magnetic head having a read sensor. During the lapping, a coil produces a magnetic field around the slider and processing circuitry monitors both a readback signal amplitude and a resistance of the read sensor. The lapping of the slider is terminated based on the monitoring both the readback signal amplitude and the resistance. Preferably, the lapping of the slider is terminated when the resistance is within a predetermined resistance range and the readback signal amplitude is above a predetermined minimum amplitude threshold or reaches its peak value. Asymmetry can also be measured in the described system, where the lapping process is terminated based on asymmetry as well as resistance and amplitude measurements.

The left side edge, right side edge, front edge and rear edge of the sensor stack are milled. The read sensor stack is annealed in a magnetic field to set the final orientation of the pinning layer, and the read sensor stack is encapsulated in overcoat material having a front surface. A projected final ABS boundary is established which lies within the overcoat material. A trim range is established relative to the projected final ABS boundary. The front surface of the overcoat material is lapped until the overcoat front surface is within the trim range. Residual overcoat material is then removed by ion beam etching.
