System And Method For Reducing Trapped Energetic Proton Flux At Low Earth Orbits

View page
US Patent:
20120223253, Sep 6, 2012
Filed:
Mar 1, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/409340
Inventors:
Konstantinos Papadopoulos - Chevy Chase MD, US
Assignee:
BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc. - Nashua NH
International Classification:
G21K 5/00
US Classification:
2504921
Abstract:
A system and method for reducing energetic proton flux trapped in the inner radiation belt by injecting Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves is disclosed. The ULF electromagnetic waves is generated by space or ground based transmitters and the frequency range is selected such that the injected waves are in gyrofrequency resonance with trapped 10 to 100 Mev protons. Pitch angle scattering of the trapped protons in gyro-resonance with the injected waves increases their precipitation rate by forcing their orbits into pitch angles inside the atmospheric loss-cone where they are lost by intaracting with the dense neutral atmosphere at altitudes below 100 km. The reduction of energetic proton flux trapped in the inner radiation belt allows use of commercial electronics with submicron feature size on Low Earth Orbit satellites and microsatellites without the operational constraints imposed by the presence of energetic proton fluxes trapped at the inner radiation belts.

US Patent:
20130181145, Jul 18, 2013
Filed:
Feb 28, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/780363
Inventors:
BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc. - Nashua NH, US
Konstantinos Papadopoulos - Chevy Chase MD, US
Assignee:
BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc. - Nashua NH
International Classification:
B01J 19/12
US Classification:
2504921
Abstract:
A system and method for improving the survivability of space systems following a High Altitude Nuclear Explosion (HANE) incident resulting in energetic electrons being trapped in the inner radiation belt of Earth is disclosed. The ULF electromagnetic waves is generated by space or ground based transmitters and the frequency range is selected such that the injected waves are in gyrofrequency resonance with trapped energetic particles. The Radiation Belt Remediation (RBR) depends on the wave-number of the injected waves and the wave-number of the injected waves increases along their propagation path when they approach the cyclotron frequency of the dominant or minority ions 0, He and H.

Ground Global Tomography (Cgt) Using Modulation Of The Ionospheric Electrojets

View page
US Patent:
57774765, Jul 7, 1998
Filed:
Dec 8, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/569774
Inventors:
Konstantinos Papadopoulos - Chevy Chase MD
International Classification:
G01V 308
G01V 312
US Classification:
324334
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for performing geological mapping utilizes an HF transmitter to heat ionospheric electrons to cause the current in an overhead electrojet to be modulated, thereby injected a low frequency EM signal into the Earth-ionosphere waveguide. A sensor measures vector values of electric and magnetic fields in an area to be surveyed. The measured vector values are provided to a processor that creates a conductivity map of the surveyed area based on the measured vector values.

Magnetized Photoconductive Semiconductor Switch

View page
US Patent:
58083499, Sep 15, 1998
Filed:
Dec 5, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/567725
Inventors:
Konstantinos Papadopoulos - Chevy Chase MD
Assignee:
APTI Inc. - Washington DC
International Classification:
H01L 2982
H01L 4300
US Classification:
257421
Abstract:
A strong magnetic field is applied to a photoconductive semiconductor switch to make the opening time of the switch independent of the recombination time of the photoionized semiconductor. As a result, the switch is capable of shaping current pulses with the fidelity of an illuminating optical pulse used to activate the switch. The strong magnetic field applied to the photoconductive semiconductor switch has a strength satisfying the relationship. mu. B>1, where. mu. is the mobility of the semiconductor (in m. sup. 2 /Volt Sec) and B the magnetic field (in Tesla). Such a switch acts as an insulator (magnetic insulation) to an applied electric field except during the time that the light incident thereon generates electron-hole pairs. During that time, a polarization current, proportional to the externally induced pair production rate, flows and the magnetic insulation is broken. The minimal system response time is controlled by the gyrofrequency of the carriers.
