Tip Protector For A Safety Catheter

View page
US Patent:
20110301551, Dec 8, 2011
Filed:
Jun 2, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/792290
Inventors:
Thomas T. Koehler - Simsbury CT, US
Kathryn L. Felicito - Rocky Hill CT, US
Harsh Chheda - Cheshire CT, US
Oscar R. Abriles - Madison CT, US
Assignee:
SMITHS MEDICAL ASD, INC. - Rockland MA
International Classification:
A61M 25/00
US Classification:
604263, 604533
Abstract:
A safety catheter includes a catheter hub, a catheter tube, a needle hub, a needle cannula having a tip, and a tip protector. The tip protector includes an outer member having a flexible tab configured to releasably engage with the catheter hub and release therefrom upon inward flexing of the tab. An inner member is positioned entirely within the outer member and has a portion that impedes inward flexing of the tab when disposed adjacent the tab. The inner member is axially shiftable relative to the outer member between a first position wherein the needle tip is distal of the tip protector and the inner member portion is disposed adjacent the tab to impede release from the catheter hub, and a second position wherein the tip is within the outer member and the inner member portion is no longer adjacent the tab and no longer impedes release from the catheter hub.

Tip Protector For A Safety Catheter

US Patent:
20120296282, Nov 22, 2012
Filed:
Aug 1, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/564396
Inventors:
Thomas T. Koehler - Simsbury CT, US
Kathryn L. Felicito - Rocky Hill CT, US
Harsh Chheda - Cheshire CT, US
Oscar R. Abriles - Madison CT, US
Assignee:
SMITHS MEDICAL ASD, INC. - Rockland MA
International Classification:
A61M 25/06
US Classification:
60416408
Abstract:
A safety catheter includes a catheter hub, a needle cannula having a tip, and a tip protector. The tip protector includes an outer member and an inner member therein. The outer member has a projection releasably engaging the catheter hub. The inner member has a pair of arms extending to free ends from a base. The inner member is axially shiftable relative to the outer member between a first position wherein the needle tip is distal of the tip protector and the free ends of the arms are spread apart such that the distal tip is not shielded, and a second position wherein the tip is within the inner and outer members and the free ends of the arms are brought into close proximity such that the distal tip is shielded. The inner member is entirely received within the outer member in both the fort and the second positions thereof.

Releasable Safety Catheter Insertion Assembly

Christopher Roehl - New Hartford CT, US
International Classification:
A61M 25/06
A61M 25/00
A61M 39/22
Abstract:
A safety catheter insertion assembly configured to inhibit access to the distal tip of a needle cannula prior to release of a catheter insertion assembly from a catheter hub. The safety catheter insertion assembly including a catheter assembly having an elastomeric blood control valve and a catheter insertion device having a safety clip, the safety clip movable between an expanded configuration in which a portion of the safety clip applies a compressive force to a portion of the elastomeric blood control valve, and a collapsed configuration in which the compressive force is reduced and release of the safety clip from the elastomeric blood control valve is enabled.
