Method And Apparatus For Computer Understanding And Manipulation Of Minimally Formatted Text Documents

View page
US Patent:
51648997, Nov 17, 1992
Filed:
May 1, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/345930
Inventors:
David Sobotka - Sunnyvale CA
Ka L. Leung - San Jose CA
Yul J. Inn - Mountain View CA
Lance Tokuda - Milpitas CA
Assignee:
Resumix, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 1500
US Classification:
364419
Abstract:
A method and apparatus which enables a computer to understand and manipulate minimally formatted text of such documents as resumes, purchase order forms, insurance forms, bank statements and similar items is disclosed. The documents are digitized by an optical scanner and translated into ASCII text by an optical character reader. The invention manipulates the digital image of the document to find blocks of contiguous text. After separating the text by block, each block is converted into an ASCII character file. Next, these files are processed by a Grammar, which uses pattern matching techniques and syntax rules to enable the host computer to understand the text. After further manipulation by the invention, the text is either stored or outputted in a form which greatly facilitates its use and readability. In this manner documents whose information content is partially location dependent can be understood despite the fact that the documents' text is written using English language phrases with little or no grammatical structure.

Glass Antenna For Rf-Ion Source Operation

View page
US Patent:
61248347, Sep 26, 2000
Filed:
Apr 3, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/054765
Inventors:
Ka Ngo Leung - Hercules CA
Yung-Hee Yvette Lee - Berkeley CA
Luke T. Perkins - Plainsboro NJ
Assignee:
The Regents of the University of California - Oakland CA
International Classification:
H01Q 2100
US Classification:
343867
Abstract:
An antenna comprises a plurality of small diameter conductive wires disposed in a dielectric tube. The number and dimensions of the conductive wires is selected to improve the RF resistance of the antenna while also facilitating a reduction in thermal gradients that may create thermal stresses on the dielectric tube. The antenna may be mounted in a vacuum system using a low-stress antenna assembly that cushions and protects the dielectric tube from shock and mechanical vibration while also permitting convenient electrical and coolant connections to the antenna.

Method And Apparatus For Automatic Categorization Of Applicants From Resumes

View page
US Patent:
51970040, Mar 23, 1993
Filed:
May 8, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/349028
Inventors:
David Sobotka - Sunnyvale CA
Ka L. Leung - San Jose CA
Yul J. Inn - Mountain View CA
Lance Tokuda - Milpitas CA
Assignee:
Resumix, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 1538
G06G 760
US Classification:
364419
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for automatically selecting the job category or categories within which an applicant should be placed using only the applicant's resume is disclosed. The invention accepts as input a computer-readable version of the applicant's resume. An extractor, using a predetermined list of word patterns, the word patterns having been selected as indicative of skill in different job categories and assigned a weight commensurate with its value as an indicator of skill in a particular job catagory or categories, locates those words and word groups found in the resume that match the patterns. The weights of these words or word groups are then summed for each particular job category and the job category or categories having the highest point totals are selected as the most appropriate areas within the applicant should be placed.
