Storing And Extracting Latent Heat

View page
US Patent:
42001480, Apr 29, 1980
Filed:
Apr 3, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/892723
Inventors:
Jerome M. Friefeld - Agoura CA
Jacob Silverman - Woodland Hills CA
Assignee:
Rockwell International Corporation - El Segundo CA
International Classification:
F28D 2100
US Classification:
165104S
Abstract:
Heat is stored by melting a mixture of salts contained in compartments between an inner and an outer tube and radial copper fins which taper in radial outward direction. The molten salts solidify upon passage of relatively cold water through the inner tube, but formation of salt deposits on the fins is deferred so that liquid salt interfaces directly with the fins for an extended period of time during heat extraction.

Thermal Buffer System

View page
US Patent:
41460570, Mar 27, 1979
Filed:
Nov 7, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/849045
Inventors:
Joseph Friedman - Encino CA
Jerome M. Friefeld - Agoura CA
Assignee:
Rockwell International Corporation - El Segundo CA
International Classification:
F03G 702
F01K 1700
F01K 2302
F24H 702
US Classification:
60648
Abstract:
A quantity of aluminum is in heat exchange contact with a potassium loop and a steam/water loop. The potassium loop includes a solar energy collector and the solar-heated potassium melts the aluminum to store thermal energy as latent heat of fusion. The steam/water loop extracts steam at 1,000. degree. F. as long as at least some of the aluminum is in the molten state. The steam/water loop includes a steam power turbogenerator unit as user; the quantity of aluminum should suffice to yield, upon resolidification, sufficient heat to satisfy the energy demand of the unit during night time.

Separated Phase Thermal Storage System

US Patent:
44186835, Dec 6, 1983
Filed:
Apr 23, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/256641
Inventors:
Jerome M. Friefeld - Agoura CA
Joseph Friedman - Encino CA
Assignee:
Rockwell International Corporation - El Segundo CA
International Classification:
F24H 700
F28D 1300
C09K 500
US Classification:
126400
Abstract:
A thermal storage system employing a fluid having a relatively high boiling point and capable of storage in separate phases, together with a substantial quantity of a chemically-compatible solid thermal storage medium.
