Engineered Environmental Structure

View page
US Patent:
6390729, May 21, 2002
Filed:
Dec 12, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/735382
Inventors:
James H. Dooley - Federal Way WA
Justin T. Maschhoff - Tacoma WA
Assignee:
Forest Concepts LLC - Federal Way WA
International Classification:
E02B 306
US Classification:
405 29, 405 15, 405 35
Abstract:
An engineered wood structure is shown that can be placed in an aquatic or other environment. It is particularly useful in environmental enhancement efforts as a resting place for various avian and aquatic species. The structure is preferably made from small logs. A number of logs are placed side-by-side to form a deck surface. A single log is spaced apart from and generally centered below the deck logs. A pair of spaced apart struts depend from the lower surface of each deck log and are connected into the keel log to form a unitary structure.

Engineered Environmental Structure And Method Of Its Use

View page
US Patent:
6402426, Jun 11, 2002
Filed:
Jan 12, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/759407
Inventors:
James H. Dooley - Federal Way WA
Justin T. Maschoff - Tacoma WA
Assignee:
Forest Concepts LLC - Federal Way WA
International Classification:
E02B 302
US Classification:
405 80, 405 25, 405 30, 405 60, 405114
Abstract:
An engineered log jam for controlling stream flow characteristics is formed from multiple layers of logs. A first layer intended to be placed parallel to stream flow consists of two or more generally parallel logs. In normal use these would be anchored to the stream bottom. A second layer of logs is placed on top of the first. This also consists of a plurality of spaced apart logs crossing the first layer. The second layer logs are angled with respect to each other to control and direct water flow passing over and through the structure. A third layer of spaced apart logs crosses the second layer logs and further acts to direct water flow. Additional layers may be used as might be dictated by the use environment. The logs are permanently joined to each other at the points of crossing.

Engineered Wood-Based Mulch Product

View page
US Patent:
6729068, May 4, 2004
Filed:
Aug 21, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/225387
Inventors:
James H. Dooley - Federal Way WA
Justin T. Maschhoff - Tacoma WA
Assignee:
Forest Concepts LLC - Federal Way WA
International Classification:
A01G 700
US Classification:
47 9
Abstract:
An engineered wood based soil mulch product is described that is a blend of geometrically regular wood elements. The blend has at least two components that differ by at least one dimension. Element length is within the range of about 50-300 mm with a maximum width of about 30 mm. The product is preferably formed from wood veneer having a maximum thickness of about 7. 5 mm. Individual elements may be formed as long strands, as rectangles, other polygons, or with curvilinear edges. Mixtures of elements having differing geometric form are acceptable and in some cases advantageous. The product has the advantages of long life, greater stability over time, and freedom of seeds from any foreign plant species.

Engineered Plant Biomass Feedstock Particles

View page
US Patent:
8034449, Oct 11, 2011
Filed:
Oct 19, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/907526
Inventors:
James H. Dooley - Federal Way WA, US
David N. Lanning - Federal Way WA, US
Thomas F. Broderick - Lake Forest Park WA, US
Assignee:
Forest Concepts, LLC - Auburn WA
International Classification:
B32B 5/16
US Classification:
428402, 428401, 144373, 47 9
Abstract:
A novel class of flowable biomass feedstock particles with unusually large surface areas that can be manufactured in remarkably uniform sizes using low-energy comminution techniques. The feedstock particles are roughly parallelepiped in shape and characterized by a length dimension (L) aligned substantially with the grain direction and defining a substantially uniform distance along the grain, a width dimension (W) normal to L and aligned cross grain, and a height dimension (H) normal to W and L. The particles exhibit a disrupted grain structure with prominent end and surface checks that greatly enhances their skeletal surface area as compared to their envelope surface area. The L×H dimensions define a pair of substantially parallel side surfaces characterized by substantially intact longitudinally arrayed fibers. The W×H dimensions define a pair of substantially parallel end surfaces characterized by crosscut fibers and end checking between fibers. The L×W dimensions define a pair of substantially parallel top surfaces characterized by some surface checking between longitudinally arrayed fibers.

Abstract:
A new class of plant biomass feedstock particles characterized by consistent piece size and shape uniformity, high skeletal surface area, and good flow properties. The particles of plant biomass material having fibers aligned in a grain are characterized by a length dimension (L) aligned substantially parallel to the grain and defining a substantially uniform distance along the grain, a width dimension (W) normal to L and aligned cross grain, and a height dimension (H) normal to W and L. In particular, the L×H dimensions define a pair of substantially parallel side surfaces characterized by substantially intact longitudinally arrayed fibers, the W×H dimensions define a pair of substantially parallel end surfaces characterized by crosscut fibers and end checking between fibers, and the L×W dimensions define a pair of substantially parallel top and bottom surfaces. The L×W surfaces of particles with L/H dimension ratios of 4:1 or less are further elaborated by surface checking between longitudinally arrayed fibers. The length dimension L is preferably aligned within 30 parallel to the grain, and more preferably within 10 parallel to the grain.
