Filed:
Apr 5, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/696848
Inventors:
Hanumant Kumar Yadav - Issaquah WA, US
William J. Westerinen - Issaquah WA, US
Todd L. Carpenter - Monroe WA, US
Stephen Richard Drake - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G09G 5/00
US Classification:
345618, 455409, 455411, 463 29, 463 30, 705 52, 705 80, 340 532, 340 54, 340 542
Abstract:
A display device for use with a computer adapted for operation in an unrestricted use mode and a limited function mode and a method for enforcing a limited function mode display is disclosed. The display device enters a limited function mode when a condition of non-compliance with an operating policy is discovered by the computer. Additionally, the display device may also enter a limited function mode upon powering up or when connections to the computer and/or selected components of the display are disabled or disconnected. When in the limited function mode, the display may support a limited function interface for use in correcting the condition of non-compliance.

Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 21/00
US Classification:
705 1447, 705 51, 705 1448, 705 1449, 705 1452, 705 67, 713182, 713185, 713189, 713193, 713194, 455410, 4554121, 726 16, 726 17, 726 20, 726 27, 726 30
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for assuring delivery of paid advertising to a user may involve asking a question about an advertisement or requiring data about the advertisement to be entered. In one embodiment, a human presence indicator, such as stylized letters, may be displayed during or after the presentation of an advertisement to be copied by a user to indicate presence during the advertisement. When the challenge relating to ad viewing is correctly answered, a value associated with viewing the ad may be credited to a user account, either locally or at a clearinghouse or other repository.

Program And Operation Verification

US Patent:
8375219, Feb 12, 2013
Filed:
Oct 24, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/977273
Inventors:
William J. Westerinen - Issaquah WA, US
Hanumant Kumar Yadav - Issaquah WA, US
Todd L. Carpenter - Monroe WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 21/00
US Classification:
713187
Abstract:
A security module may be used to verify integrity of an executable program and may also be used to verify execution of the executable program on a computer. The security module may directly read a computer memory by asserting bus master control of a system bus. The executable program may be directly verified by calculating a hash or may be indirectly verified by an intermediate program that calculates the hash and passes it to the security module. To verify operation, the executable program may cause an interrupt to be generated when the executable program is in a known state. An interrupt service routine may trigger the security module to read registers in the computer processor via a debug port. If either the verification of the executable program fails or the register values are inconsistent with operation of the executable program, the security module may interrupt operation of the computer.

Multi-Source Program Module Updater

View page
US Patent:
6795965, Sep 21, 2004
Filed:
Sep 26, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/670985
Inventors:
Hanumant K. Yadav - Bellevue WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 944
US Classification:
717168, 717103, 717106, 717171, 717173, 709201, 709203
Abstract:
Described herein is a technology for automatically updating the most current program modules associated with a just-detected hardware device. In one described implementation, a program-module updater generates a list of to-be-copied program modules. Typically, these modules are associated with just-detected hardware devices. This implementation of the updater stores a data structure for each module in such list. Each data structure includes an entry that indicates the source location of the associated module. For example and typically, the source location is the original source location for the installation of the operating system. The updater implementation examines the list to identify any of the listed modules have been updated and it modifies the associated data structure of each updated module so that a source entry in each data structure indicates the updated source for the updated module. The updater copies all modules in the list to a hardware-specific program module storage location of a computer. The source of each module is indicated by its associated data structure.
