Optically-Energized, Emp-Resistant, Fast-Acting, Explosion Initiating Device

View page
US Patent:
47006293, Oct 20, 1987
Filed:
May 2, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/859165
Inventors:
David A. Benson - Albuquerque NM
Glenn W. Kuswa - Albuquerque NM
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the United States
Department of Energy - Washington DC
International Classification:
F42C 1908
US Classification:
102201
Abstract:
Optical energy, provided from a remote user-operated source, is utilized to initially electrically charge a capacitor in a circuit that also contains an explosion initiating transducer in contact with a small explosive train contained in an attachable housing. Additional optical energy is subsequently supplied in a preferred embodiment to an optically responsive phototransistor acting in conjunction with a silicon controlled rectifer to release the stored electrical energy through the explosion initiating transducer to set off the explosive train. All energy transfers between the user and the explosive apparatus, either for charging it up or for setting it off, are conveyed optically and may be accomplished in a single optical fiber with coding to distinguish between specific optical energy transfers and between these and any extraneous signals.

Magnetically Insulated Diode For Generating Pulsed Neutron And Gamma Ray Emissions

View page
US Patent:
46751459, Jun 23, 1987
Filed:
Aug 16, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/641225
Inventors:
Glenn W. Kuswa - Albuquerque NM
Ramon J. Leeper - Albuquerque NM
Assignee:
The United State of America as represented by the United States
Department of Energy - Washington DC
International Classification:
H05H 704
US Classification:
376108
Abstract:
A magnetically insulated diode employs a permanent magnet to generate a magnetic insulating field between a spaced anode and cathode in a vacuum. An ion source is provided in the vicinity of the anode and used to liberate ions for acceleration toward the cathode. The ions are virtually unaffected by the magnetic field and are accelerated into a target for generating an nuclear reaction. The ions and target material may be selected to generate either neutrons or gamma ray emissions from the reaction of the accelerated ions and the target. In another aspect of the invention, a field coil is employed as part of one of the electrodes. A plasma prefill is provided between the electrodes prior to the application of a pulsating potential to one of the electrodes. The field coil multiplies the applied voltage for high diode voltage applications. The diode may be used to generate a. sup. 7 Li(p,. gamma. ). sup.

Enhanced Efficiency Electro-Enhancement Process For Surfaces

View page
US Patent:
20170088966, Mar 30, 2017
Filed:
Sep 28, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/279059
Inventors:
- Watertown WI, US
Glenn Kuswa - Madison WI, US
International Classification:
C25D 11/02
Abstract:
This disclosure provides systems and methods for improved electro-enhancement of surfaces of workpieces. The systems and methods can include immersing a metal workpiece in a salt bath and applying a time-varying electric current that has periods of high current with periods of lower current between. The systems and methods provide borided metal workpieces that contain preferred borides on the surface and lack less preferred borides. For example, the systems and methods can provide borided steel having FeB and substantially lacking FeB on the surface.
