US Patent:
7849939, Dec 14, 2010
Filed:
Aug 7, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/187948
Inventors:
Geoffrey C. Downton - Sugar Land TX, US
Richard Harmer - Surrey, GB
Assignee:
Schlumberger Technology Corporation - Sugar Land TX
International Classification:
E21B 15/04
E21B 17/10
US Classification:
175408, 175 73
Abstract:
The present invention recites a drill bit comprising a main body having an axis about which it is rotated in use, a cutting face, a connecting means for attaching the bit to a source of rotary motion, a gauge region intermediate said cutting face and the connecting means. Additionally the gauge region comprises at least one member movable between a first position in which the gauge region is bounded by an imaginary tubular surface of constant cross-section co-axial to the axis of rotation and a second position in which a portion of the member is located radially inwards, with respect to the axis of rotation, of its position when said member is in said first position. In accordance with the present invention, the gauge region whilst said member is in said second position being bound by an imaginary three dimensional conical sectional surface; and at least one actuator.

US Patent:
7971661, Jul 5, 2011
Filed:
Aug 13, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/191204
Inventors:
Ashley Bernard Johnson - Milton, GB
Geoffrey C. Downton - Sugar Land TX, US
John M. Cook - Cambridge, GB
Assignee:
Schlumberger Technology Corporation - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
E21B 17/10
US Classification:
175408, 175 73
Abstract:
The drill bit system may include a chassis, a head, and a first plurality of gauge pads. The chassis may be configured to be operably coupled with a first rotational motion source. The head may include a first plurality of cutters coupled with an end of the head, and the head may be rotatably coupled with chassis. The head may be configured to be operably coupled with a second rotational motion source. The first plurality of gauge pads may include a second plurality of cutters, and the first plurality of gauge pads may be fixedly coupled with the chassis.

US Patent:
20090194334, Aug 6, 2009
Filed:
Feb 13, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/370903
Inventors:
Ashley Johnson - Cambridgeshire, GB
Walter David Aldred - Hertfordshire, GB
Geoffrey Downton - Sugar Land TX, US
Riadh Boualleg - Cambridge, GB
Kjell Haugvaldstad - Vanvikan, NO
Michael Sheppard - Cambridgeshire, GB
Assignee:
Schlumberger Technology Corporation - Cambridge MA
International Classification:
E21B 7/08
E21B 7/04
E21B 7/06
US Classification:
175 61, 175 76
Abstract:
This disclosure relates in general to a method and system for controlling a drilling system for drilling a borehole in an earth formation. More specifically, but not by way of limitation, embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for controlling dynamic interactions between the drilling system for drilling the borehole and an inner surface of the borehole being drilled to steer the drilling system to directionally drill the borehole. In another embodiment of the present invention, data regarding the functioning of the drilling system as it drills the borehole may be sensed and interactions between the drilling system for drilling the borehole and an inner surface of the borehole may be controlled in response to the sensed data to control the drilling system as the borehole is being drilled.

Filed:
May 28, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/996660
Inventors:
Geoffrey C. Downton - Sugar Land TX, US
Iain Cooper - Sugar Land TX, US
Mike Williams - Sugar Land TX, US
Robert Utter - Sugar Land TX, US
International Classification:
E21B 34/06
E21B 4/00
E21B 10/00
E21B 7/04
E21B 7/00
H02K 49/10
US Classification:
166373, 175293, 175328, 175 61, 175 57, 310103
Abstract:
A directional drilling system, a drilling hammer and a fluid flow telemetry modulator use a plurality of magnets arranged to convert rotational motion into reciprocating linear motion. Various types of motor can provide rotational motion to a part of the magnets and various linkages and other devices can cause steering or operation of a modulator valve. A torsional drilling hammer uses a plurality of magnets arranged to convert reciprocating linear motion into reciprocating rotational motion. A motor and linkage drives the linearly moving part of the magnets, and the rotating part provides torsional impact be striking the linearly moving part of the magnets.
