US Patent:
40954986, Jun 20, 1978
Filed:
Jun 14, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/695838
Inventors:
Frank McKay Biggar - Angola NY
International Classification:
B26D 156
US Classification:
83346
Abstract:
A diecutting apparatus is disclosed which accepts interchangeable die cylinders of a variety of lengths and diameters. Rapid replacement, adjustment and reversal of the die is possible. The station has a support bar for mounting the die cylinder and a slidable support for the die cylinder bearing blocks. The bearing blocks slide horizontally along the support bar to accept die cylinders of a variety of lengths. The support bar is mounted at each end on transverse slides which slide vertically to accept die cylinders of a variety of diameters. Mounted above the die cylinder support bar is a support slide on which are mounted contact rollers and pressure cylinders for applying a biasing force to the die cylinder. The slides may be fixed in place for each particular die cylinder used. The pressure cylinders and contact rollers act on bearing surfaces on the die cylinder.

US Patent:
41389441, Feb 13, 1979
Filed:
Jul 30, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/710148
Inventors:
Frank M. Biggar - Angola NY
International Classification:
B41F 1320
B41F 1330
B41F 1344
US Classification:
101247
Abstract:
A printing press for use in printing a continuous paper web having a fountain section and a plate section each pivotally mounted to a main frame. The fountain section includes a removable ink fountain and rotatably mounted fountain and transfer rolls, and the plate section includes a rotatably mounted plate cylinder. An impression cylinder is rotatably mounted in the main frame. The fountain section is pivotal for selective engagement and separation of the transfer roll with the plate cylinder, and the plate section is pivotal for selective engagement and separation of the plate cylinder with the transfer roll and the web supporting impression cylinder. The pivotal sections are actuated by hydro-pneumatic cylinders and are adjusted against mechanical stops which maintain the adjustment of the contacts between the respective cylinders and rolls. The fountain section also has adjustment and mechanical stop devices for selectively engaging and separating the fountain roll with the transfer roll. The print or plate cylinder is adjustable reciprocally along a plane such that the exchange of plate cylinders of different sizes is readily accommodated by the adjustable position of that cylinder along the mounting plane and does not require an appreciable adjustment of the rotating axis of the transfer roll.

US Patent:
40784908, Mar 14, 1978
Filed:
Dec 29, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/755613
Inventors:
Frank M. Biggar - Angola NY
International Classification:
B41F 1312
US Classification:
101248
Abstract:
In an apparatus such as a printing press or collator for performing operations such as printing, perforating, punching, die cutting, crimping and the like on a continuous paper web, a registration unit for particular use in a crimping and tractor station and for changing the phase index of a shaft relative to the web where said shaft is rotatably mounted between parallel frame members of said crimping and tractor station or unit, the registration unit having a sleeve rotatably mounted about the shaft with a sleeve gear drive mounted thereto and rotatable therewith. A second gear drive member is mounted to the sleeve and concentric with the sleeve gear drive for rotation therewith, said sleeve gear drive providing a drive means for rotatably driving said shaft. A motor drive and gear assembly is mounted to said shaft outboard of said frame and inboard of said sleeve for rotation with said shaft and is in engagement with said second gear drive member for selectively rotating said shaft relative to said sleeve, whereby relative rotation of said second gear drive member and shaft produces rotation of said shaft relative to said sleeve and sleeve gear drive. In one aspect of the invention each tractor and crimper shaft is drivingly interconnected, with a registration unit provided for each shaft, thus providing selective phase indexing of each shaft relative to the web.

US Patent:
40856747, Apr 25, 1978
Filed:
Jul 30, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/710143
Inventors:
Frank M. Biggar - Angola NY
International Classification:
B41F 1314
US Classification:
101248
Abstract:
In an apparatus such as a printing press or collator for performing operations such as printing, perforating, punching, die cutting, and the like on a continuous paper web, a registration unit for changing the phase of a first shaft relative to a second shaft where said shafts are rotatably mounted between parallel frame members of the apparatus, the registration unit having a sleeve rotatably mounted about the second shaft with a concentric output gear mounted thereto and rotatable therewith. An output drive gear is mounted to the sleeve and concentric with the output gear for rotation therewith, said output gear providing the output drive for rotatably driving said first shaft. A motor drive and gear assembly is mounted to said second shaft outboard of said frame for rotation therewith and is in engagement with said output drive gear for selectively rotating said output drive gear relative to said second shaft, whereby rotation of said output drive gear relative to said second shaft produces rotation of said sleeve, output gear, and first shaft relative to said second shaft. In one aspect of the invention said sleeve is rotatably mounted about said second shaft outboard of the frame members and said output gear is also outboard of said frame members. In another aspect of the invention, said sleeve extends through one of said frame members, and said output gear is located inboard of said frame members.
