Methods For Near Simultaneous Chemiluminescent Sulfur And Nitrogen Detection

View page
US Patent:
59165235, Jun 29, 1999
Filed:
Dec 4, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/760247
Inventors:
Xinwei Yan - Houston TX
Eugene Malcolm Fujinari - Spring TX
Assignee:
Antek Instruments, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G01N 700
US Classification:
422 83
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are disclosed for the near simultaneous detection of light emitted from ozone induced chemiluminescence of nitrogen and sulfur species capable of undergoing ozone induced chemiluminescence in a single instrument. A sample containing sulfur and/or nitrogen is first subjected to an oxidative/reductive process which generates ozone reactive nitrogen and sulfur species which are then forwarded to an specially designed ozone/detector chamber. The ozone reactive species are brought in contact with ozone in the special chamber and the chemiluminescence of the nitrogen species and the sulfur species are measured and quantitated.

Apparatus And Method For Interfacing An Open Capillary And Detector For Conducting Off-Column Analyses

View page
US Patent:
58883630, Mar 30, 1999
Filed:
Sep 3, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/707696
Inventors:
Mohammad Amin Abubaker - Galveston TX
Eugene M. Fujinari - Spring TX
John R. Petersen - Seabrook TX
Michael G. Bissell - Galveston TX
Assignee:
Antek Instruments, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G01N 2726
G01N 27447
US Classification:
204452
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for interfacing a capillary with a detector is disclosed. In particular, a capillary that is used in a capillary electrophoresis technique is interfaced with an off-column detector that is destructive of the sample or that will otherwise create adverse affects on the operations of the capillary electrophoresis. By way of example only, a nitrogen chemiluminescent detector using pyro-chemiluminescent techniques is discussed. An interface between the separation and detection systems is essential to prevent interference between the two systems. The interface apparatus and method are achieved by creating a closed connection between the two systems within which the pressure and sample flow rate can be controlled. Pressure control is achieved through the introduction and venting of gas into and from the integrated system. Interference between interfaced systems is then prevented by equalizing the pressure in the interface apparatus with the head pressure on the inlet end of the capillary.

Method For Measuring And Determining Nitrogen Content In A Sample And Providing An Output Data Of Total Nitrogen And Selected Constituent Nitrogen Compounds Including Nitrate And Nitrite

View page
US Patent:
53004418, Apr 5, 1994
Filed:
Jan 21, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/016172
Inventors:
Eugene M. Fujinari - Spring TX
Allen J. Britten - Sydney, CA
Assignee:
Antek Instruments, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
G01N 2162
G01N 2176
US Classification:
436110
Abstract:
A method for analyzing total bound nitrogen in a sample and providing an output data of total bound nitrogen and constituent compounds (nitrate and nitrite) is disclosed. The total nitrogen bound method provides a discrete sample through a furnace in the presence of continuous flow of water as carrier as well as oxygen carrier gas, resulting in the oxidation of the nitrogen compounds to nitric oxide. The nitrate method involves a discrete sample with water as a carrier provided to a sparge tank. The nitrite is catalytically reduced to nitric oxide in the presence of tartaric acid and ascorbic acid. The nitrate method involves a first conversion to change the nitrate to a nitrite. The first conversion occurs in the presence of a copper-cadmium catalyst causing the formation of the NO. sub. 2. The nitrile is subsequently converted into NO. The nitric oxide produced in each of the three methods is measured in a chemiluminescent nitrogen detector.
