AN UNSATURATED ETHYLENIC MONOMER HAVING THE FORMULA ##EQU2## p WHEREIN X is an ester, aldehyde, ketone, halogen, ether, nitrile, isocyanate, sulfate and its salts, an N-containing heterocycle, or an aromatic hydrocarbon, graft polymerized on a poly (N-vinyl lactam) substrate, a stable aqueous emulsion containing same and a method of production therefor.

Method Of Preparing A Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Halogen Complex Of Improved Stability

View page
US Patent:
46845194, Aug 4, 1987
Filed:
Apr 9, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/849918
Inventors:
Eugene S. Barabas - Watchung NJ
Assignee:
GAF Corporation - Wayne NJ
International Classification:
A61K 3179
US Classification:
424 80
Abstract:
The invention relates to the process for making a highly stable polyvinylpyrrolidone-halogen complex by forming a reaction solution in a diffusion zone containing a 3 to 9 percent aqueous solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone and halogen dissolved in an alcohol solution wherein the concentration of alcohol is not less than 40% of the total solutions and wherein a portion of the halogen requirement, up to 35%, may be in the form of hydrogen halide or a salt thereof; reacting the polypyrrolidone and halogen components and forming a water/alcohol azeotrope simultaneously with the corresponding polyvinylpyrrolidone-halogen complex; subjecting the reacted mixture to azeotropic distillation to remove an aqueous alcohol distillate; recycling the distillate to the halogen solubilizing or diffusion zone and subjecting the remaining liquid product solution, containing not more than about 35% solids, to spray drying to recover the polyvinylpyrrolidone/halogen product in the form of a particulate solid wherein each particle is of a uniform brownish yellow color throughout.

Preparation Of Linear Cyclic Polyimides From Latices

View page
US Patent:
41699246, Oct 2, 1979
Filed:
Jun 9, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/805001
Inventors:
Eugene S. Barabas - Watchung NJ
Andrew Klein - Somerville NJ
Assignee:
GAF Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
C08F 832
US Classification:
525377
Abstract:
Linear cyclic polyimides are prepared by reacting a latex prepolymer with ammonia, an organic primary amine, hydroxylamine or a mixture thereof, at a temperature between 50. degree. C. and 300. degree. C. The prepolymer contains reactive functional groups, such as carboxyl, amide, alkyl ester and nitrile. The linear cyclic polyimides are thermoplastic materials.

Water-Soluble Complexes Of Water-Insoluble Organic Compounds

View page
US Patent:
48534390, Aug 1, 1989
Filed:
Oct 9, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/106845
Inventors:
Eugene S. Barabas - Watchung NJ
Assignee:
GAF Corporation - Wayne NJ
International Classification:
C08F 834
US Classification:
5253269
Abstract:
A novel, highly water soluble complex of a substantially insoluble organic compound and a solid homopolymer or copolymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone. The complex exhibits water solubilities in excess of about 25-fold that of the insoluble organic compound. A method for producing the complex is disclosed wherein the polymer and insoluble compound are dissolved in a mutual solvent, allowed to react for a period of time sufficient to form the complex, and then the solvent is removed to produce the dried highly water-soluble complex.
