Winch And Fluid Control System Therefor

View page
US Patent:
40047792, Jan 25, 1977
Filed:
May 5, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/574807
Inventors:
Edward E. Flesburg - Peoria IL
Assignee:
Caterpillar Tractor Co. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
B66D 100
US Classification:
2541874
Abstract:
A rotatable drum for reeling in and releasing a cable has drive means which includes a normally disengaged drive input clutch, a normally engaged brake and a normally engaged disconnect clutch which may be used to uncouple the drum from the drive system so that it may be turned manually to withdraw cable. The input clutch may be selectively engaged and the brake and disconnect clutch may each be selectively disengaged by fluid pressure from a control valve connected to a source of fluid pressure. The valve has a Hold or Brake-On position at which each of the clutches and the brake are unpressurized, a Reel-In position at which the input clutch and the brake are pressurized, a Brake-Off position at which only the brake is pressurized and further has a Free-Spool position at which the disconnect clutch is pressurized to free the drum from the resistance or drag of the drive system. Centering springs resist movement of the control valve away from the Brake-On position. To facilitate manual control of the valve, additional resilient means are arranged to create added resistance to further movement of the control valve as it approaches the Free-Spool position to assist the operator in avoiding overshifting to that position when it is not desired.

Filter Bypass Indicator

US Patent:
39419584, Mar 2, 1976
Filed:
Aug 9, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/496042
Inventors:
Edward E. Flesburg - Peoria IL
Assignee:
Caterpillar Tractor Co. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
H01H 3538
US Classification:
200 82R
Abstract:
A fluid filter system includes housing means, including a housing body and a terminal fixed thereto, a filter element and a bypass associated with the housing body, a piston movable in first and second directions relative to the housing body and resilient means for urging the piston in the first direction. The piston is also movable in the second direction against the resilience of the resilient means. The piston is movable in the first direction to a position directing fluid through the filter element, and movable in the second direction upon buildup of fluid pressure thereon due to blockage of fluid flow in the filter element, against the resilience of the resilient means, to a position wherein the fluid flow may bypass the filter element. The improvement comprises a helical spring for maintaining an electrically conductive state between the piston and the terminal means upon an initial degree of movement of the piston in its second direction and for breaking the electrically conductive state between the piston and the terminal upon further movement of the piston in the second direction due to further fluid pressure buildup on the piston.

Non-Metallic Flow Divider

US Patent:
58486399, Dec 15, 1998
Filed:
Jan 24, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/788682
Inventors:
Edward E. Flesburg - Peoria IL
Raymond D. Stratton - Peoria IL
Steven M. Shaffer - Peoria IL
Douglas B. Penney - Waterford WI
Assignee:
Caterpillar, Inc. - Peoria IL
Modine Manufacturing Company - Racine WI
International Classification:
F28D 716
US Classification:
165176
Abstract:
A heat exchanger includes a first header and tank assembly having an inlet port and an outlet port. First and second tubes are included, each tube in fluid communication with the first header and tank assembly and with the other tube. An elastomeric baffle is disposed in the first header and tank assembly to substantially prevent fluid flow between the inlet port and the outlet port except through the first and second tubes.

Sand Core Pattern And Method Of Forming A Sand Mold

View page
US Patent:
42943035, Oct 13, 1981
Filed:
Mar 13, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/195719
Inventors:
Edward E. Flesburg - Peoria IL
Assignee:
Caterpillar Tractor Co. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
B22C 700
B22C 902
US Classification:
164 44
Abstract:
A sand core pattern (11) for producing a one-piece cast wheel (10) having a radially inner shell (12), a radially outer blade support (13), and a plurality of angled blades (14) extending in a spaced, annular array (22). The pattern includes a plurality of similar segments (15), each having an inner end portion (18) defining a portion of the profile of the shell, and an outer end portion (21) defining the profile of the blade. The segments are supported in annular array about a mandrel (25) and are circumscribed by a split ring (26) defining the pattern for the outer blade support portion of the wheel (10). The inner portions of the segments are defined by angled side surfaces (16,17) which, in alternate ones of the segments in the annular array, converge and diverge toward the center of the array. Upon completion of the forming of the sand mold about the pattern, the mandrel and outer ring are removed, permitting the segments having the inwardly diverging side faces to be withdrawn inwardly from the array and permit the remaining segments then to be withdrawn inwardly therefrom.
