Abstract:
A flat interface nerve electrode is provided along with a method for its use. The electrode provides a plurality of conductive elements embedded in a non-conductive cuff structure, which acts to gently and non-evasively redefine the geometry of a nerve through the application of a force so as to apply pressure to a nerve in a defined range, namely from 2 to 40 mmHG and more preferably from 15 to 30 mmHG and most preferably from 15 mmHG to 20 MMHG. This range is selected to minimize the reduction of blood flow within the tissue, which preferably is at least 70% of the initial value, more preferably 90% of the initial value. The cuff has an opening, which is elongated relative to the diameter of the nerve to which it is applied. Preferably, the cuff is constructed from an elastic bio-compatible material having top and bottom beam members configured to define a nerve opening. The cuff is open at one side and has a connection at the other side which results in a spring force being applied through the surfaces of the nerve opening to the subject nerve.

Abstract:
This invention is a fully implanted functional electrical stimulator ( ) apparatus, a method for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea that provides for both reliable detection/prediction or airway occlusion that relieves, and/or prevents same by selective, direct electrical stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve (HG). The method, and apparatus sense hypoglossal nerve electro-neurogram activity for purposes of detecting or predicting obstructive sleep apnea. The sensed hypoglossal nerve activity, itself, is used to trigger functional electrical stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve in order to improve upper airway patency. Further, an improved hypoglossal nerve stimulation electrode ( ) interface (IC) is provided that allows for simultaneous hypoglossal nerve activity sensing, and stimulation by eliminating stimulation artifacts that would otherwise trigger further erroneous stimulation.

Abstract:
Apparatus and methods associated with controlling seizure activity with electrical stimulation that either suppress axonal conduction between brain structures and/or that generate a desired response in a targeted neuronal pool are described. One example apparatus includes an implantable stimulating electrode that provides an electrical stimulus to fiber tracts of the hippocampal commissure of the brain of a subject. The stimulus may be a high frequency structure that prevents communication of signals associated with an epileptic episode and/or prevents seizure activity in a target nucleus. The example apparatus may also include a detection logic that detects specific electrical activity in the central nervous system that identifies that an epileptic episode is imminent. The example apparatus includes a pacing system to selectively configure and apply the electrical stimulus to fiber tracts of the hippocampal commissure of the brain.

Abstract:
Methods of treating pain are disclosed, wherein a non-pulsed, low-frequency electrical current is applied to the nerve carrying the pain signals in order to suppress transmission of those signals. In desired embodiments, the current is applied in a direction transverse to the nerve axis. Such currents have been found not to induce motor-neuron recruitment, meaning these methods can treat pain without causing muscle spasm or other muscular responses. A cuff for applying such a current transverse to the nerve axis is also disclosed.
