Vehicle Overcenter Latch Assembly

View page
US Patent:
6345846, Feb 12, 2002
Filed:
Dec 17, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/465651
Inventors:
Delbert D DeRees - Romeo MI
Patrick J OMahoney - West Bloomfield MI
Assignee:
DaimlerChrysler Corporation - Auburn Hills MI
International Classification:
E05C 304
US Classification:
292241, 292DIG 49, 292 66
Abstract:
An overcenter latch assembly for securing a moveable member including a bracket secured to a first member and a saddle secured to a second member in opposed relation to the bracket. The saddle includes longitudinally spaced apart, transversely extending recesses formed thereon. Each recess is formed with a transversely extending raceway ending in opposed inboard and outboard pivot sockets. A release cover is pivotally connected to the bracket. The release cover has a member pivotally secured thereon. The pivoting member has opposed extensions adapted to be received in the inboard pivot socket of the recess for pivotal movement of the release cover about an inboard axis in a latching direction from an initial unlatched position. The raceways are oriented in the direction substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the release cover with the release cover in an unlatched to latched position such that initially rotating the release cover in a latching direction pivots the release cover about the inboard axis through a predetermined first angle so as to cause downward force on the saddle via the extensions such that continued rotation causes the extensions to travel to an outboard position on the raceways and to seat in associated outboard sockets. Continued rotation of the release handle about an outboard axis to the latch position causes the release cover to travel to a predetermined locked position.

Arrangement For Attaching A Plastic Vehicle Body To A Metal Frame And Related Method

View page
US Patent:
6394537, May 28, 2002
Filed:
Jan 31, 2001
Appl. No.:

Inventors:
Delbert D DeRees - Romeo MI
Assignee:
DaimlerChrysler Corporation - Auburn Hills MI
International Classification:
A61G 300
US Classification:
296191, 296 29, 296 351, 296187, 525731
Abstract:
A plastic vehicle body attachment system for a motor vehicle. The attachment system includes a metal support, a plastic panel having an aperture, and a fastener. The fastener is disposed in the aperture and detachably couples the plastic panel to the metal support. The fastener is smaller than the aperture by an amount that varies in relation to the distance between the fastener and a fixed point on the composite panel such that the size of the aperture increases as the distance between the fastener and the fixed point increases.

Delbert D. DeRees - Romeo MI
Thomas S. Moore - Oxford MI
David R. Bernier - Rochester Hills MI
Assignee:
DaimlerChrysler Corporation - Auburn Hills MI
International Classification:
H02P 500
US Classification:
318283, 318266, 318466, 318286, 318468, 49 26, 49280
Abstract:
A lift type tailgate on a passenger van type vehicle body is operated by an electric motor powered actuator with an electronic control circuit utilizing a microprocessor operating under program control to respond to user-initiated opening and closing signals to move the tailgate in the selected direction. In the control circuit, feedback information to the microprocessor indicative of tailgate position is provided by a potentiometer coupled with the actuator motor and the microprocessor is programmed to operate with this information to stop the tailgate at a wide open position, a partially closed position and a fully closed position. Obstruction detection is performed by the microprocessor using an obstruction detection circuit and additionally by monitoring the position signal input from the potentiometer to stop the tailgate on encountering an obstacle. Activation of a tailgate latching mechanism is performed under the control of the microprocessor using a solenoid drive circuit and warning or alerting sounds indicating tailgate closure operation including tailgate stoppage at the partially closed position are provided in accordance with audio data received from the microprocessor.

Car Body Part With Hidden Bonding Surface

View page
US Patent:
57410453, Apr 21, 1998
Filed:
Jul 1, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/886839
Inventors:
Delbert D. DeRees - Romeo MI
Donald E. Jay - Troy MI
Assignee:
Chrysler Corporation - Auburn Hills MI
International Classification:
B62D 2500
US Classification:
296203
Abstract:
A first car body part to be bonded to a second car body part. The first car body part includes a sealing wall and a supplemental wall having a first side end and a second side end. The sealing wall has a bonding surface to be bonded to a surface of the second car body part. The supplemental wall joins the sealing wall at the first and second side ends forming a void between the sealing wall and the supplemental wall. The joined sealing wall and supplemental wall form a tubular member having a top end and a bottom end. The sealing wall, the bonding surface, the supplemental wall, and the void may be elongated. The first car body part may have a top capping wall and a bottom capping wall, the top capping wall sealing the top end of the tubular member and the bottom capping wall sealing the bottom end of the tubular member, thereby fully enclosing the void. The first car body part may be, e. g. , a side body panel, a door interior trim panel, an instrument panel, or a hardware panel.

Axle Drive

US Patent:
48524263, Aug 1, 1989
Filed:
Oct 6, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/105972
Inventors:
Delbert D. DeRees - Romeo MI
Assignee:
American Motors Corporation - Southfield MI
International Classification:
F16H 5702
US Classification:
74607
Abstract:
An axle drive mechanism comprises an input shaft rotatably mounted in a housing having bearings for supporting the input shaft at opposite ends of the housing. The input shaft includes a pinion gear in meshed engagement with a driven gear coaxially secured about the longitudinal axis of two axle shafts which extend outwardly from the housing. The housing also includes openings at each end of the housing through which the end portions of the input shaft are exposed exteriorly of the housing so that either or both ends of the input shaft can be coupled to a drive line. The axle drive also includes a closure cap adapted to be received in the opening at one end of the housing for enclosing the housing and protecting the unused shaft end.

Vehicle Adjustable Sling Seat

US Patent:
58069100, Sep 15, 1998
Filed:
Apr 30, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/641257
Inventors:
Delbert D. DeRees - Romeo MI
Assignee:
Chrysler Corporation - Auburn Hills MI
International Classification:
B62D 2504
B60N 100
US Classification:
296 63
Abstract:
An adjustable sling seat for a motor vehicle occupant compartment defined by a floor and an overhead roof structure. A flexible webbing has its forward end connected to a webbing storage roller assembly rotatably supported about a transverse axis on a floor mounted front anchorage mechanism while the webbing aft end is connected to a roof mounted rear anchorage mechanism. The webbing slack length, suspended between the front and rear anchorage mechanisms, defines a forward seat cushion surface portion and an aft seat back surface portion. A roller take-up spring clutch includes a pintle member, aligned on the roller axis, pivotally connecting one end of the roller to a clutch rotary control knob. Turning the knob rotates the roller in either direction, for shortening or lengthening the slack length, thereby either raising or lowering the seat cushion surface portion. The front anchorage mechanism includes a roller assembly bracket, pivoted to a floor mounted base, wherein a latching arrangement acting between the roller pivot bracket and the base enables the bracket to be unlatched for forward and aft arcuate adjustment of the roller assembly.
