Process For Producing Ethanol

View page
US Patent:
6509180, Jan 21, 2003
Filed:
Dec 29, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/720930
Inventors:
Dan Verser - Golden CO
Tim Eggeman - Lakewood CO
Assignee:
ZeaChem Inc. - Golden CO
International Classification:
C12P 706
US Classification:
435161, 435139, 435140, 435162, 568885
Abstract:
A process for producing ethanol including a combination of biochemical and synthetic conversions results in high yield ethanol production with concurrent production of high value coproducts. An acetic acid intermediate is produced from carbohydrates, such as com, using enzymatic milling and fermentation steps, followed by conversion of the acetic acid into ethanol using esterification and hydrogenation reactions. Coproducts can include corn oil, and high protein animal feed containing the biomass produced in the fermentation.

US Patent:
7074603, Jul 11, 2006
Filed:
Oct 9, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/268290
Inventors:
Dan W. Verser - Golden CO, US
Timothy J. Eggeman - Lakewood CO, US
Assignee:
Zeachem, Inc. - Golden CO
International Classification:
C12P 7/06
C12P 7/14
C12P 7/62
US Classification:
435135, 435161, 435162
Abstract:
A process for producing ethanol by the conversion of carbohydrates from a corn dry milling process in which the bottoms fraction from distillation of ethanol in a conventional yeast fermentation is used in a process including a combination of biochemical and synthetic conversions. The process results in high yield ethanol production with concurrent production of high value coproducts. An acetic acid intermediate is produced from bottoms fraction, followed by conversion of the acetic acid into ethanol using esterification and hydrogenation reactions. Coproducts of the process include a high protein content solids fraction produced in the fermentation.

Recovery Of Organic Acids

US Patent:
7601865, Oct 13, 2009
Filed:
Jan 28, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/046206
Inventors:
Dan W. Verser - Golden CO, US
Timothy J. Eggeman - Lakewood CO, US
Assignee:
ZeaChem, Inc. - Golden CO
International Classification:
C07C 62/00
C07C 51/42
C07B 53/00
US Classification:
562508, 562600, 562606, 562608
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for the recovery of an organic acid from a dilute salt solution in which the cation of the salt forms an insoluble carbonate salt. A tertiary amine and COare introduced to the solution to form the insoluble carbonate salt and a complex between the acid and an amine. A water immiscible solvent, such as an alcohol, is added to extract the acid/amine complex from the dilute salt solution to a reaction phase. The reaction phase is continuously dried and a product between the acid and the solvent, such as an ester, is formed.
