Earth-Penetrating Synthetic Image Radar

View page
US Patent:
53390806, Aug 16, 1994
Filed:
Apr 8, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/043715
Inventors:
William J. Steinway - Maitland FL
James E. Thomas - Orlando FL
Carl R. Barrett - Orlando FL
Buddy G. Beck - Fairfax VA
Assignee:
Coleman Research Corporation - Fairfax VA
International Classification:
G01S 1308
G01S 1390
US Classification:
342 22
Abstract:
An earth-penetrating synthetic image radar system includes a frequency generator, a transmitter, a microprocessor-based timing and frequency controller, a reference receiver, a parallel polarized receiver, an orthogonal polarized receiver, a digitizer, a calibration processor, a position measurement reference, and an image processor. A plurality of frequency synthesizers are utilized within a single frequency generator to transmit a fast-stepped synthetic image containing a series of discrete frequencies. A switch is used to select between the outputs of the synthezisers for control of the transmitter's frequency output. With a first synthesizer of a frequency f. sub. 1 selected, a second synthesizer is being directed digitally to change to the next step in the frequency stepping sequence, frequency f. sub. 2. The synthesizers are switched into use by the frequency generator in a ping-pong manner; the first synthesizer handling all the odd-number frequencies, the second handling all even-number frequency selections.

Data Fusion Workstation

View page
US Patent:
53216130, Jun 14, 1994
Filed:
Nov 12, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/974405
Inventors:
David W. Porter - Annapolis MD
James S. Vandergraft - Washington DC
Buddy G. Beck - Fairfax Station VA
Bruce P. Gibbs - New Carrollton MD
Assignee:
Coleman Research Corporation - Fairfax VA
International Classification:
G01V 500
G06F 1500
US Classification:
364420
Abstract:
A data fusion workstation provides an apparatus and method for realizing the full potential of geophysical and remote sensing by mathematically integrating sensors with each other. Sensor data from each of a plurality of sensor types are related mathematically to each other through a common site model to produce a fused picture with quantified accuracy. Using the concept of pseudo-data, information in sensor data is made equivalent to data in a statistical correlation model, allowing fusion of model information with sensor data during a data inversion step. The process of data fusion comprises several processing steps, which are executed by various microprocessors in a recursire/distributed/parallel-architecture platform. These steps comprise geophysical inversion, geostatistical Kriging, application of statistical information concepts, implementation of a square root information smoother, and application of likelihood techniques.

Integrated Apparatus For Mapping And Characterizing The Chemical Composition Of Surfaces

View page
US Patent:
54163218, May 16, 1995
Filed:
Apr 8, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/043722
Inventors:
Richard L. Sebastian - Mason Neck VA
Buddy G. Beck - Fairfax Station VA
Assignee:
Coleman Research Corporation - Fairfax VA
International Classification:
B01D 5944
H01J 4900
G01C 300
US Classification:
250288
Abstract:
An apparatus which accurately maps and detects contaminants within interior surfaces is provided. The apparatus finds use in supporting decontamination operations by providing on-site chemical analyses defining the condition of contaminated areas and monitoring the progress of clean-up operations. An optical vision system is used to accurately map the surface to be investigated or treated as a reference. Analytical probes are used to sample the mapped surface to detect inorganic and organic contaminants in situ. Automated controls which manipulate the analytical probes and high speed analytical equipment, such as a high speed gas chromatograph, are optionally used to take large numbers of samples quickly and remotely. The optical vision system tracks the position of the analytical probes, providing an accurate map of the location of the contaminants. The precise positioning of the contaminants and ease of sampling allows for more accurate characterization of the surfaces before, after, and during clean-up operations.
