Abstract:
An inkjet printer prints variable image identifying information on a substrate with a first side having a release agent thereon and a second side having an activated chemical adhesive thereon. The inkjet printer includes at least one inkjet head for transferring an ink to the first side of the substrate and a pair of opposed guide rollers, a nip roller assembly and a driven platen roller opposite the inkjet head for advancing the substrate past the inkjet head. The inkjet printer further includes a fuser for drying the ink immediately after the variable identifying information is printed on the substrate. Preferably, the variable identifying information is printed on the substrate at a rate that is compatible with the operating speed of a tape applicator on a conventional high-speed production line.

Abstract:
A label tamp is provided for delivering and applying a linerless adhesive label to the outside surface of a container transported on a conveyor to the labeling station of a production line. The label tamp includes a tamp cylinder defining an axis of extension that is generally normal to the outside surface of the container, a tamp arm secured to the tamp cylinder such that the tamp arm is alternately extensible and retractable, a tamp arm base plate rigidly fixed to the tamp arm and a tamp head assembly. Preferably, the tamp head assembly is secured to a lift plate has a pair of parallel recesses for receiving a pair of linear actuators therein so that the tamp head assembly is linearly movable relative to the tamp arm base plate. Preferably, the tamp head assembly includes a tamp head resiliently mounted to a tamp head mounting plate so that the tamp head is rotatable in any combination about orthoganol axes perpendicular to the axis of extension of the tamp cylinder, and is linearly movable in a direction parallel to the axis of extension of the tamp cylinder. Preferably, the tamp head is resiliently mounted to the tamp head mounting plate by a plurality of springs positioned on a corresponding plurality of shoulder bolts between the tamp head and the tamp head mounting plate.

Abstract:
An apparatus for printing variable identifying information on the tape is disclosed. In a particular application, the apparatus replaces a labeling station and is combined with a case sealing station to seal cases with adhesive sealing tape on a conventional production line. The apparatus includes a variable image printer, and preferably a thermal printer. The thermal printer preferably includes a thermal transfer print head and a thermal transfer ribbon specially engineered to print through the release agent on the face of the tape. The tape is dispensed from a tape unwind spool and is routed past the print head with the thermal transfer ribbon positioned between the print head and the face of the tape, and the face of the tape opposite the print head. The thermal transfer ribbon is co-engineered with the tape to be compatible with the physical characteristics and chemical composition of the tape. Accordingly, the apparatus can be utilized to label any desired surface with tape having variable identifying information, such as product codes, stock or lot numbers, bar codes, and shipping data printed thereon.
