Double-Sided Package For Power Module

View page
US Patent:
7786486, Aug 31, 2010
Filed:
Aug 2, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/497804
Inventors:
Leo Francis Casey - Lexington MA, US
Bogdan Szczepan Borowy - Billerica MA, US
Gregg Herbert Davis - Harvard MA, US
Assignee:
Satcon Technology Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
H01L 31/111
US Classification:
257 76, 257706, 257712, 257E2311, 257E23112
Abstract:
An electronic semiconductor package is described. The package has a wide band gap electronic semiconductor device requiring heat removal. On one side of the electronic semiconductor device is a first, thermally-conductive, electrically-insulative substrate having a predetermined electrically-conductive wire pattern affixed thereto. On the other side of the electronic semiconductor device is a second, thermally-conductive, electrically-insulative substrate. A heat removal device is mechanically-coupled to the second substrate. The heat removal device is made of a graphite-metal or metal-matrix composite material and a fin array structure of the same material. The coefficients of thermal expansion of the heat removal device and the first and second substrates are matched to minimize internal and external stresses.

System And Method For Vehicle Position Sensing With Use Of Propulsion Windings

View page
US Patent:
8499697, Aug 6, 2013
Filed:
Feb 20, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/390119
Inventors:
Bogdan S. Borowy - San Diego CA, US
Husam Gurol - Carlsbad CA, US
Assignee:
General Atomics - San Diego CA
International Classification:
B60L 13/06
US Classification:
104284
Abstract:
A system and method are provided for determining the position of a vehicle on a guideway. For operation, the vehicle includes a magnet system having a wavelength “λ”. Further, the guideway includes a propulsion winding for carrying a propulsion current. Structurally, the propulsion winding includes a series of sections, with each section having a wavelength “λ”. Further, the propulsion winding includes “N” coils linearly aligned along the guideway, with a phase difference of “λ/N” between adjacent coils. Importantly, a transmitter is located on the vehicle for emitting a position current that interacts with the propulsion winding to produce a signal in each coil. Also, the system includes a trap connected to each coil for receiving each respective signal, and a processor for resolving the respective signals to determine the position of the vehicle on the guideway.

System And Method For Vehicle Position Sensing With Helical Windings

View page
US Patent:
8532918, Sep 10, 2013
Filed:
Mar 13, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/404161
Inventors:
Bogdan S. Borowy - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
General Atomics - San Diego CA
International Classification:
G01C 21/00
H04B 5/00
US Classification:
701408, 455 411
Abstract:
A system and method are provided for determining the position of a vehicle on a guideway. For operation, the vehicle carries a magnetic array having a wavelength “λ”. Further, the guideway includes a propulsion winding for carrying a propulsion current. Also, the guideway is provided with a position winding that has the same wavelength “λ” and includes two helical wires that are displaced from each other by “λ/4”. Importantly, a transmitter is located on the vehicle for emitting a position current that interacts with the position winding to generate a return signal from each helical wire. Also, the system includes a processor for receiving and evaluating the return signals to determine the position of the vehicle on the guideway. As a result, the determined position is used to maximize the interaction of the propulsion current with the magnetic array for propulsion of the vehicle.

Sensor-Less, Low Frequency Adaptive Current Limiter And Methods For Limiting Inductive Current Using The Same

View page
US Patent:
20070210766, Sep 13, 2007
Filed:
Mar 10, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/373722
Inventors:
Bogdan Borowy - Billerica MA, US
Leo Casey - Lexington MA, US
International Classification:
G05F 1/00
US Classification:
323222000
Abstract:
Devices and systems that use an adaptively limited PWM duty-cycle to control a circuit and methods and control programs to operate and to control the devices and systems to adaptively limit the PWM duty-cycle are disclosed. The devices and systems are capable of adjusting the duty-cycle such that the actual inductor current in the next cycle is precisely limited. Specifically, a maximum allowable duty-cycle for time interval N+1 is estimated during time interval N. When the duty-cycle is applied to the circuit at time interval N+1, the peak inductor current is kept below a maximum allowable inductor current level.
