Abstract:
A method for modifying one or more system resources is provided. One or more licenses for modifying one or more system resources on a client device can be acquired. An authenticator can be generated and stored on a remote server. The authenticator can be transferred to the client device. The client device can be connected to the remote server and the remote server can authenticate the client device via the authenticator. The remote server can confirm the availability of one or more licenses, and based on the availability of one or more licenses, modify one or more system resources disposed in, on, or about the client device. After modifying the one or more system resources the remote server can decrement the remaining license count.

Bios Password Security Using Modified Scan Codes

View page
US Patent:
20070101117, May 3, 2007
Filed:
Oct 27, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/261134
Inventors:
Mark Piwonka - Houston TX, US
Bernard Desselle - Houston TX, US
David DeLisle - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
G06F 9/00
H04L 9/00
G06F 15/177
H04K 1/00
US Classification:
713002000, 713183000
Abstract:
A BIOS password security technique includes first logic operable to extract a down scan code from a keyboard input queue, the down scan code having a most significant bit; second logic operable to examine case-related auxiliary information; and third logic operable to set the state of the most significant bit responsive to the case-related auxiliary information, thereby creating a modified scan code.

Methods And Systems For Updating A Bios Image

View page
US Patent:
20070169076, Jul 19, 2007
Filed:
Oct 28, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/261101
Inventors:
Bernard Desselle - Spring TX, US
Timothy McDonough - Tomball TX, US
Christoph Graham - Houston TX, US
William Jacobs - Houston TX, US
Louis Hobson - Tomball TX, US
International Classification:
G06F 9/44
US Classification:
717168000
Abstract:
In at least some embodiments, a computer system comprises a processor and a system memory coupled to the processor. The system memory stores a multi-platform management interface that, when executed, enables communication between the computer system and an updating computer. The computer system further comprises a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) memory coupled to the processor, the BIOS memory stores a BIOS image and function calls compatible with the multi-platform management interface, wherein at least one of the function calls is selectively initiated to update the BIOS image based on communication with the updating computer via the multi-platform management interface.

Clearing Secure System Resources In A Computing Device

View page
US Patent:
20110179264, Jul 21, 2011
Filed:
Oct 3, 2008
Appl. No.:
13/120653
Inventors:
Bernard D. Desselle - Spring TX, US
Mark A. Piwonka - Tomball TX, US
International Classification:
G06F 9/06
G06F 1/26
US Classification:
713 2, 713300
Abstract:
Systems and methods of clearing system resources are disclosed. One example method includes the step of detecting a failure to clear a secure portion of a system resource in a device. The method also includes the step of powering off the system resource for a period of power-off time that is sufficient to clear data from the system resource, where the power off is responsive to the failure detection. The method also includes the step of unlocking the secure portion of the system resource, where the unlock is responsive to the period of power-off time having elapsed.

Systems And Methods Of Determining A Trust Level From System Management Mode

View page
US Patent:
20120017285, Jan 19, 2012
Filed:
May 18, 2009
Appl. No.:
13/260308
Inventors:
Mark A Piwonka - Tomball TX, US
Bernard D. Desselle - Spring TX, US
Louis B. Hobson - Tomball TX, US
International Classification:
G06F 21/00
US Classification:
726 27
Abstract:
Systems and methods of determining a trust level from system management mode are disclosed. One such method includes: responsive to a system management mode interrupt (SMI), determining a trust level associated with code invoking the SMI; and responsive to determining that the trust level is untrusted, granting or denying a request made by the code invoking the SMI based at least in part on a type of the request.

Plurality Of Interface Files Usable For Access To Bios

View page
US Patent:

Filed:
Aug 25, 2009
Appl. No.:
13/384597
Inventors:
Luke Mulcahy - Houston TX, US
Bernard D. Desselle - Spring TX, US
Christoph J. Graham - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
G06F 15/177
US Classification:
713 2
Abstract:
A system may comprise a processor () and first storage device () coupled to the processor. The first storage device contains a basic input/output system (BIOS) () executable by the processor. The system may also comprise a second storage device () coupled to the processor. The second storage device may contain a management interface () usable by an operating system to access the BIOS. A plurality of interface foes () may also be provided, each interface file being usable by the management interface to access the BIOS and each interface file defining one or methods for use by the interface or BIOS. While executing the BIOS, the processor determines a configuration of the system and, based on the determined configuration, selects a particular interface file for use during run-time.
