Method And Device For Multi-Parametric Ultrasonic Assessment Of Bone Conditions

View page
US Patent:
6468215, Oct 22, 2002
Filed:
Jul 16, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/906156
Inventors:
Armen P. Sarvazyan - Lambertville NJ
Alexej Tatarinov - North Brunswick NJ
Assignee:
Artann Laboratories - Lambertville NJ
International Classification:
A61B 800
US Classification:
600438, 600449
Abstract:
A method of assessment of bone conditions comprises acquiring of unilateral sequential ultrasonic measurements along the trajectory over the surface of an examined bone. The method utilizes measurements of a set of ultrasonic parameters from a plurality of ultrasonic transfucers moved along the tested bone surface. Measured parameters are displayed as profile graphs characterizing bone conditions. The set of measured and displayed ultrasonic parameters can include: velocity of a longitudinal wave; velocity of a flexural wave; attenuation of the longitudinal wave; attenuation of the flexural wave; frequency slope of attenuation of the longitudinal wave; frequency slope of attenuation of the flexural wave; changes of spectral characteristics of propagating the longitudinal wave; and changes of spectral characteristics of propagating the flexural wave. To eliminate the influence of soft tissues on the measured parameters, the thickness of soft tissue layer over the examined area of bone is measured by pulse-echo ultrasonic channels incorporated in the transducers. Based on the ultrasound parameters and their combinations, quantitative evaluation of bone mineralization (ossification) status, structure and cortical thickness is made.

Self-Palpation Device For Examination Of Breast

Inventors:
Armen P. Sarvazyan - Lambertville NJ
Vladimir Egorov - Plainsboro NJ
Assignee:
Artann Laboratories - Lambertville NJ
International Classification:
A61B 5103
US Classification:
600587, 600595
Abstract:
A method and device in accordance with the present invention enable detecting changes in mechanical and structural properties of the breast tissue that are indicative of breast cancer development. In one embodiment of the invention, an array of force sensors based on PVDF piezopolymer film, data acquisition circuit, and a microprocessor are mounted in a hand held pad. Detection of nodules is achieved by pressing the sensing pad onto the breast, oscillating it over regions under investigation, and analyzing spectral and phase characteristics of the signal from the sensors in the array. The device is able to objectively detect presence of suspicious lesions in the breast and provide a warning signal.

Real Time Mechanical Imaging Of The Prostate

View page
US Patent:
6569108, May 27, 2003
Filed:
Mar 28, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/819419
Inventors:
Armen P. Sarvazyan - Lambertville NJ
Vladimir Egorov - Plainsboro NJ
Assignee:
Profile, LLC - Birmingham AL
International Classification:
A61B 5103
US Classification:
600587
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method for real time mechanically imaging the prostate with a transrectal probe. In the method, the prostate image is synthesized and displayed in real time during the examination process. In a preferred embodiment, a compact prostate examination device comprises a probe sized to fit within the rectum and having a head with a tactile sensor longer than the axial length of an average prostate, an electronic unit and a display. As the pressure sensing part of the head is pressed against and moved over the prostate, it generates signals characterizing mechanical structure of the examined area. An accelerometer based motion tracking system is mounted in the probe for determining the position of the pressure transducer array during prostate examination. The electronic unit incorporated into the handle of the probe receives the pressure and motion data to calculate mechanical and geometrical features of the prostate and displays it on the display.

Self-Palpation Device For Examination Of Breast With 3-D Positioning System

View page
US Patent:
6595933, Jul 22, 2003
Filed:
Jun 7, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/876565
Inventors:
Armen P. Sarvazyan - Lambertville NJ
Vladimir Egorov - Plainsboro NJ
Assignee:
Artann Laboratories - Lambertville NJ
International Classification:
A61B 5103
US Classification:
600587, 600595
Abstract:
A method and device for high resolution 3-D detection of changes in mechanical and structural properties of the breast tissue that are indicative of breast cancer development. A compact hand held device comprises a pressure sensor array, a self-contained motion tracking system integrated with the pressure sensor array, and an electronic unit with a display. Mechanical imaging of the breast is achieved by pressing the sensing pad onto the breast, oscillating it over breast tissue portions with sequential returning to a reference point. Analysis of pressure response data for oscillatory deformations comprises cumulative summation of a plurality of pressure patterns after spatially shifting every pattern by a pre-calculated value in an opposite direction of pressure sensor array motion. Determining mechanical and geometrical features of the breast inner structures includes formation of a 3-D mechanical image of the breast combining results of local scanning at all breast sites.

Colonoscope Handgrip With Force And Torque Monitor

View page
US Patent:
6981945, Jan 3, 2006
Filed:
Nov 12, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/986662
Inventors:
Armen Sarvazyan - Lambertville NJ, US
Louis Y. Korman - Rockville MD, US
Sergey Tsyuryupa - Levittown PA, US
Assignee:
Artann Laboratories, Inc. - Lambertville NJ
International Classification:

US Classification:
600131, 606 1
Abstract:
A handgrip for a colonoscope shaft capable of measuring and presenting to the operator of radial and longitudinal forces applied by the operator during the manipulation with the colonoscope. The handgrip includes an internal sleeve positioned over the shaft of the colonoscope so that it can be released and repositioned by depressing a release button. And external sleeve covers the internal sleeve and provides for a convenient grip by the operator. The only means of transmission of force applied by the operator from the external sleeve to the internal sleeve is the engaging means such as a flexible rectangular bar or a set of engaging plates imbedded between the external sleeve and internal sleeve. The engaging means are equipped with a set of sensors such as strain gages positioned on all sides of the bar to measure the forces between the sleeves, which correspond to the forces applied by the operator to the shaft of the colonoscope. The measurements are then transmitted to an electronic unit for data processing and then further to a display system such as a personal computer.
