Device And Method For Reducing Pump Laser Instability Due To Amplified Rayleigh Scattering Feedback

View page
US Patent:
7471447, Dec 30, 2008
Filed:
Jul 9, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/888652
Inventors:
Antonios A. Seas - Ellicott City MD, US
Michael L. Dennis - Ellicott City MD, US
Roger Dorsinville - Teaneck NJ, US
William Shieh - Clarksville MD, US
Assignee:
Broadwing Corporation - Austin TX
International Classification:
H04B 10/17
H04B 10/12
US Classification:
359334, 3593413
Abstract:
A device and method for reducing amplified Rayleigh backscatter at a Raman pump. A pump assembly for an optical amplifier includes a set of pump radiation sources for Raman pumping an optical transmission span. Each pump radiation source is adapted to produce radiation having a pump wavelength and a pump power. The optical transmission span is adapted to provide Raman amplification of an optical data signal when pumped by the set of pump radiation sources. At least one optical isolator is selectively located between at least one selected pump radiation source and the optical transmission span to reduce amplified Rayleigh backscatter at the pump wavelength of the selected pump radiation source from feeding back into the selected at least one pump radiation source.

Traffic Light Status Remote Sensor System

View page
US Patent:
7495579, Feb 24, 2009
Filed:
Jun 13, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/151377
Inventors:
J. Marcos Sirota - Takoma Park MD, US
Antonios Seas - Ellicott City MD, US
David Mostofi - Chevy Chase MD, US
International Classification:
G08G 1/095
US Classification:
340907, 340931, 340641, 246473 R
Abstract:
A Traffic-Light Status Remote Sensor System is disclosed. The basic system consists of a set of lenses, detectors, and narrowband filters. The sensor system is capable of determining the status of a traffic light (red, amber, or green) from a distance, without any connection to the electronic boards controlling the traffic light. A portable red-light photo-enforcement system working independently from the traffic light controllers is a potential application of the remote traffic light sensor.

System And Method For Traffic Monitoring, Speed Determination, And Traffic Light Violation Detection And Recording

View page
US Patent:
7616293, Nov 10, 2009
Filed:
Apr 29, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/118540
Inventors:
J. Marcos Sirota - Takoma Park MD, US
Antonios Seas - Ellicott City MD, US
Christopher Field - Baltimore MD, US
Marzouk Marzouk - Annapolis MD, US
Assignee:
Sigma Space Corporation - Lannam MD
International Classification:
G01P 3/36
US Classification:
356 28, 356 285
Abstract:
A system of lasers and detectors to detect the presence of objects and determine their speed is disclosed. The system comprises of a pair of lasers and a pair of detectors focused through a single lens or a pair of lenses. An electronic board that accompanies the lasers and detectors is used to provide the logic and decision making mechanism. Data collected and processed by the system yields such information as whether an object is present, whether the object is stationary or is moving, and subsequent speed information. The described system is also capable of providing additional information concerning the characteristics of the moving object such as its profile and length, and indication of a traffic violation.

Compact Single Lens Laser System For Object/Vehicle Presence And Speed Determination

View page
US Patent:
20050285738, Dec 29, 2005
Filed:
Jun 10, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/150748
Inventors:
Antonios Seas - Ellicott City MD, US
Christopher Field - Baltimore MD, US
J. Sirota - Takoma Park MD, US
International Classification:
G08B013/18
US Classification:
340557000, 340907000
Abstract:
A compact system for determining the presence and speed of an object/vehicle, and its application for Red Light Camera photo-enforcement is disclosed. The disclosed system uses accurate timing, laser radiation in the form of optical pulses, and the scattering effect of optical pulses from the road or vehicle surface to determine the presence of a vehicle, and estimate its speed. The system can determine whether an object/vehicle is present at a specific location, estimate its height, and in the case that the object/vehicle is moving, the system can estimate its speed. Combining the disclosed technology with commercially available digital recording techniques and equipment, a traffic photo-enforcement system can be constructed. The system is capable of monitoring traffic in an intersection/highway, measure vehicle speed, identify potential traffic violations, and trigger a visual recording device such as a camera or video system for documenting a violation. The system can serve as a tool by law enforcement agencies and research groups for other applications, such as measurement of traffic density, monitor vehicle speed, and the study of traffic patterns. Other important information that can be generated from the disclosed system is the profile of a moving object/vehicle, the length of the moving object/vehicle, and whether the moving object/vehicle was accelerating or decelerating. Further analysis of the recorded data can yield information relevant to the make and model of the passing vehicles.
