B23K 9/04
B32B 3/10
US Classification:
416229 A, 219 761, 428601
Abstract:
A process for building up a leading edge of a machine component such as a leading edge of a turbine blade for a turbocharger includes forming a molten pool along the edge of the machine component, feeding a filler material in a solid state into the molten pool and melting the filler material via heat transfer between the molten pool and the filler material. A solid layer may be formed along the leading edge by cooling the molten pool. The process is applicable to remanufacturing damaged machine components having a plurality of blades with relatively thin leading edges.

Thick Gage Welding

View page
US Patent:
20090314757, Dec 24, 2009
Filed:
Jun 18, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/141691
Inventors:
Alexei P. Yelistratov - Dunlap IL, US
Assignee:
Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
B23K 9/00
B32B 15/00
US Classification:
219137 R, 428615
Abstract:
A method of thick gage welding joins a first work piece to a second work piece. Abutting edges of the pieces are parallel and separated by a gap G. A displacer is inserted between the work pieces with its bottom surface substantially flush with undersides of the work pieces. The displacer width w is from 0.5G to 0.7G and the displacer height h is about 1.5 times the weld penetration depth. Respective root passes are executed with average current along the bottom of the displacer at the edge of the first work piece and the second work piece. Subsequently, respective root passes are executed at full current, or higher than average current, along the top of the displacer at the edge of the first work piece and the second work piece. The remaining space is filled via additional welding pass(es) to create a completed weld.

Method For Repairing A Turbine

View page
US Patent:
20090320288, Dec 31, 2009
Filed:
Jun 30, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/216124
Inventors:
Alexei P. Yelistratov - Dunlap IL, US
Marion B. Grant - Princeville IL, US
International Classification:
B23P 6/00
US Classification:
298891
Abstract:
A method for facilitating turbine repair is disclosed. The method includes determining wear characteristics of a turbine blade based on at least one of turbine type or turbine application. The method also includes determining a delineated repair area on the turbine blade based on the determined wear characteristics of the turbine blade. The method additionally includes providing a replacement turbine blade part generally matching the size, shape, and material of the turbine blade.

Apparatuses And Methods For Welding And For Improving Fatigue Life Of A Welded Joint

View page
US Patent:
20100089888, Apr 15, 2010
Filed:
Oct 10, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/285659
Inventors:
James Anthony Forck - Peoria IL, US
Alexei Peter Yelistratov - Dunlap IL, US
Mark Wayne Hammerton - Peoria IL, US
International Classification:
B23K 9/00
C21D 1/40
US Classification:
219136, 219162
Abstract:
A method for welding an edge of a first member to a side surface of a second member is provided. The first member and the second member are joined to one another at a joint. The method includes beveling an edge of the first member. The method also includes positioning the edge of the first member proximate the side surface of the second member. The method further includes supplying welding material via a welding wire along the edge of the first member to create a joint between the first and second members. Supplying welding material includes controlling a feed rate of the welding wire, such that a weld bead formed at the joint defines a concave cross-section.

Alloy Depositing Machine And Method Of Depositing An Alloy Onto A Workpiece

View page
US Patent:
20120325779, Dec 27, 2012
Filed:
Jun 22, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/166319
Inventors:
Alexei Yelistratov - Dunlap IL, US
Assignee:
CATERPILLAR, INC. - Peoria IL
International Classification:
B23K 9/04
US Classification:
219 7614, 219 761
Abstract:
A hardfacing machine is used for depositing a hardfacing alloy onto a metallic workpiece. An welding unit includes a wire feed system to supply wire to a welding head. A powder alloy feeding system includes a powder feed nozzle fluidly connected to an alloy powder supply. The welding head and powder feed nozzle move in a travel direction relative to the workpiece. The powder feed nozzle is positioned and oriented to feed a powder stream of alloy powder into a molten pool generated on the workpiece by an electrical arc produced by the welding head at a low temperature location behind the welding head relative to the travel direction. This alloy surfacing strategy limits vaporization of alloy elements by avoiding the high temperature region associated with the electrical arc.
