Method For Converting Biomass Into Synthesis Gas Using A Pressurized Multi-Stage Progressively Expanding Fluidized Bed Gasifier Followed By An Oxyblown Autothermal Reformer To Reduce Methane And Tars

View page
US Patent:
20100040510, Feb 18, 2010
Filed:
Aug 18, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/543461
Inventors:
Sarabjit S. Randhava - Evanston IL, US
Richard L. Kao - Northbrook IL, US
Todd Harvey - Schaumburg IL, US
Ajaib S. Randhava - Streamwood IL, US
Surjit S. Randhava - Evanston IL, US
International Classification:
B01J 8/18
B01J 8/20
US Classification:
422140, 422139, 422232
Abstract:
The invention provides systems and methods for converting biomass into syngas using a pressurized multi-stage progressively expanding fluidized bed gasifier to eliminate or reduce the formation of methane, volatiles such as BTX, and tars. The gasifier may include a reactive stage that may receive a biomass feed through a feed line and oxygen through an oxygen feed line. The gasifier may also include a fluidized bed section that may be configured to receive the reaction products from the first stage, mix them and perform fluidized bed activity. A gasifier may also have a disengagement section that may be configured to separate fluidized media and particulate matter from syngas product. A gasification system may also include oxyblown catalytic autothermal reactor and a cryogenic air separation unit.

Extraction Of Immobilized Oil Using Mixtures Of Food Grade Solvents

View page
US Patent:
20130197249, Aug 1, 2013
Filed:
Mar 10, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/582982
Inventors:
Sarabjit S. Randhava - Evanston IL, US
Todd Harvey - Schaumburg IL, US
Ajaib S. Randhava - Streamwood IL, US
Gregory Dicosola - Westmont IL, US
Assignee:
Syngest, Inc. - San Francisco CA
International Classification:
C11B 1/10
US Classification:
554 14, 210178
Abstract:
The invention provides extraction of immobilized oil from an oil-containing feed using a food grade solvent. The food grade solvent may include ethyl acetate or ethyl lactate. The solvent may also include an ethanol co-solvent with the ethyl acetate or ethyl lactate. The solvent may be recaptured within the system and reused in the process.

Fatty Acids From Phytoplankton

View page
US Patent:
20130287917, Oct 31, 2013
Filed:
Jul 27, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/191660
Inventors:
Surjit Singh Randhava - Evanston IL, US
Sarabjit Singh Randhava - Evanston IL, US
Richard Kao - Northbrook IL, US
Todd Harvey - Schaumburg IL, US
Ajaib Singh Randhava - Streamwood IL, US
Gregory Dicosola - Westmont IL, US
International Classification:
C12P 7/64
US Classification:
426471, 435134
Abstract:
This invention relates to a new process for making fatty acids directly from a feedstock consisting of phytoplankton in water without the need to a) thermally separate, dewater and dry the phytoplankton, and b) extract the immobilized lipids. Our method is much less expensive than the current practice of making fatty acids from phytoplankton, because we bypass the costly and energy intensive operations associated with a) dewatering and drying the biomass, and b) extracting the immobilized lipids. As such, this invention greatly enhances the economic viability of making biofuels and bioproducts from phytoplankton.

Oil Recovery From Dry Corn Milling Ethanol Production Processes

View page
US Patent:
20080176298, Jul 24, 2008
Filed:
Nov 13, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/939191
Inventors:
Sarabjit S. Randhava - Evanston IL, US
Richard L. Kao - Northbrook IL, US
Steven G. Calderone - Oak Park IL, US
Ajaib S. Randhava - Streamwood IL, US
International Classification:
C12P 7/64
C12M 1/00
US Classification:
435134, 4352911
Abstract:
A corn oil extraction process is disclosed. The process includes the recovery of corn oil and other co-products, including but not limited to steam, electric power and chemicals, from an ethanol production process and in particular, a process that involves dry corn milling methods. The process involves extraction of oil from milled corn and residues from the fermentation step, including thick stillage, distillers wet grain, distillers dry grain and distillers dry grains with solubles, by the application of an alkyl acetate, phase separation and recovery of the separated matter. A process of drying wet co-product using ethanol and carbon dioxide from the production facility is also disclosed.
